To my Marquette friends, I hope you guys can help me with this. Sorry, moderators, if you have to move this. I have posted it in Parent Cafe, but since we're dealing with a Jesuit priest, I thought my Marquette friends might be able to help out with this.

My son's Latin and Greek teacher is getting ordained this summer. He was a scholastic for two years at our Jesuit high school during son's eighth and ninth grade, and son is a Facebook friend with him.

We are thrilled that his former teacher is getting ordained this summer, and he graciously invited my son to his ordination, as well as his first Mass celebration, to be held at the high school where he taught my son. The invitation is gorgeous, even more so than a wedding invite, and my son would love to give him a gift, as a token of friendship and congratulations on his achievement.

Can any of you suggest a gift? Is a check not appropriate? And where does one send the gift? He is not yet assigned a parish, that we know of, and will celebrate another Mass in his hometown a month later, so he'll be on the road. There are brief receptions noted in the ordination and Mass invites, so son was wondering if he should bring something there. If so, he would not want to bring a check, as that could easily be misplaced.

There will no doubt be many attendees, as we have a large Jesuit population in our community, and most of the high school will probably attend as well, as he not only taught for two years, but also led many of the clubs, so he was well liked by all the students.

Thanks for any advice on this. We'll need this for the future, too, as at least two other friends of my son's are heading to the priesthood and we hope to attend their ordinations as well, though they will be probably ten years off.
