ORFE vs. ChemE

My son is an odd duck, he loves STEM and liberal arts equally. He did especially well in math / chemistry and had a lot of chemistry related ECs. He has decided to attend Princeton as ChemE, but during an open house he became intrigued with ORFE (operations research and financial engineering - https://orfe.princeton.edu), at Princeton ORFE encompasses a wide range of fields including machine learning, probability, statistics.

Dealing with big data seems like an area that will be in demand for the foreseeable future, but I’m a little worried about him ignoring the “safety” of an ABET ChemE degree.

Valid concern? Is ORFE trendy degree?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts…

For the foreseeable future the ORFE degree should be fine for jobs. The jobs will be different than those of a CHEME, of course.
