Organ School

What school/conservatory has a good organ program that allows you to double major. Also, do these schools give much financial aid?

From your prior thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1012901-organ-schools.html

OP, what state are you in? Given that you’re asking about financial aid, I’d say take a look at University of Michigan if you already have a strong academic record and live in Michigan – but there’s not a boatload of merit money for out-of-staters and it’s expensive for OOS (aprox $48 k) – though not more expensive than the conservatories or privates. Oberlin, on the other hand, meets full NEED (as defined by them.) Do you know your EFC? That makes a difference. Knowing your GPA and ACT/SAT scores might help to some degree in suggesting programs as well.

I would say Oberlin is a great bet

although I don’t know much about organ (i love the instrument though) they had a whole organ department and practice rooms with mini pipe organs. obviously their double degree program is well sought after and they have great financial aid

Michigan for the right student is no more expensive than anywhere else - as an out of state student my son was offered both music merit and academic merit money that made it comparable to his other offers (which were substantial.) However, the financial aid offer which we saw first was laughable. They have a really fascinating organ concert chamber - down deep in the basement and all stone enwrapped like a church. If you have the academics and musical skills - I’d say look into it for sure.

^That organ is awesome. Had a chance to attend a concert with McSon!
My concern for the poster was that if he/she were concerned about money to approach Michigan with eyes wide open. Some expect the cost to be the equivalent of other state flagships when in fact the OOS rate more closely reflects its world rank and commonality in rigor with some of the privates. So while I personally know of highly talented out of staters with almost a full ride (academic + SOM) scholarship; I also know quite a few who were very underwhelmed with their offers – particularly high EFCers from OOS, since Michigan only commits to meeting full need of in state residents.

A smaller school with good financial aid, merit aid for academics and musical talent, would be Baldwin Wallace. Also, Ithaca college has a beautiful organ in their recital hall and nice merit aid.
