Organic Chemistry II

Hi everyone. The professors to choose for the Spring semester are Davidson, Shantl, and Portmess. I would take it with Davidson but schedule doesn't allow. Have any of you taken Orgo II with Schantl or Portmess? Thanks so much.

D has portmess now for Orgo I, and she loves him as a prof, but she admits she’s working really, really hard in that class. Just had a test last night that she’s a bit worried about. We’ll see, general consensus was “ouch!” She’s talking about taking him again, however, for Orgo II in the spring because she feels he knows his stuff and she’s learning a lot. Wonder what she’ll say after she gets her grade back from last night.

Schantl just isn’t an option.

Honestly… with those options I would just delay taking it unless you want to take Portmess. I hate organic chemistry and readily admit I will take the professor who is easier. The professor won’t make the subject any easier; if you are taking a legitimate organic chem course, especially at UF, you will work hard no matter what. But the truth is some professors give “fairer” more well-rounded exams than others. From what I have seen of his past exams, Portmess just gives some tough and sometimes tricky exams.

Without going any further though, I would choose Davidson. Make it fit your schedule. She is great. She also coordinates organic lab so she will make sure you know the stuff you need for that.

thanks so much for the advice zebes and mysitifire  Definitely will try to take Davidson!
