Hi, I was looking into a DE course for over the summer, and I was wondering which one would be better. I’m probably going to major in something chem related, whether it’s engineering or just chem.
I can take Organic Chemistry or Analytical over the summer since AP Chem would count as my prereq. If I do organic chem, there’s a possibility I could do foundations of biochemistry in the fall, but that’s not for certain. But, it is a bigger time commitment and meets more often than analytical.
So, which one would you guys recommend?
Whichever you decide, make sure you take it seriously. Upper-level chemistry courses are no joke, and on your last thread you said you don’t really need to study or do homework for your current classes. This class may require a big change of strategy that could catch you off-guard if you’re not ready for it.
@bodangles Thanks for the response! I do definitely take my upper-level courses seriously; I took DE freshman year and studied a lot, ending up with a 99 both semesters. It’s just my problem with hs classes lol
This is a very risky thing to do over the summer. This grade will be on your transcript FOREVER. Proceed with caution
Do NOT take organic chemistry as a high school student. AP chem is Not sufficient to prepare you for that class, which even without the compressed format of a summer session is a killerof pre-med dreams and deliberately weedout.
I would suggest taking general chemistry 1 to compare AP chem to a compressed college course in chemistry. If there are two summer sessions, take general chemistry 1&2.
@MYOS1634 thank you!! my main concern was that ap chem wouldn’t be enough preparation for it, and I have heard that the class can be really difficult. Do you know if analytical would be just as difficult?
Is analytical at your university the general chemistry class for majors?
@MYOS1634 no, it’s prereqs are a C- or higher in Gen Chem 1&2 like organic chem, which the ap credit counts towards. I don’t know how bad it would be though b/c AP Chem is really easy for me
Then you need to take General Chem 2. AP Chem normally only covers General Chem 1. It’s good AP Chem comes easy to you, because it’s a hard AP! Even if General Chem 2 at your college covers some stuff you’ve already seen, it’ll be useful to know a bit in order to adapt to the pace (basically, in terms of pace, 1 week of AP chem will equal one DAY of summer General Chem).
@MYOS1634 thank you so much for the help!!
