Organizations on campus/other advice/input about anything?

Hi people!

Just a little bit bored here at work (understatement), so just wondering: any last minute advice/suggestion/input about anything? Maybe from those amazing current students who've been helping us newbies out for so long now??

For instance, recommendations on organizations/clubs on campus we should definitely consider joining?

And for transfers/freshmen: Arent you all excited to death!?!? After all these months, it just hit me, right now, I'm going to UNC Chapel Hill!!!! In 18 days!!!! lol
I'm so happy I cant stop smiling :)

I hope everyone's in the same mood!..maybe a little less psyched or prone to rambling as I am but well lol

Picking Cotton. =(

I’m so unpsyched about reading it.

It is so good! I’m reading it over again, haha.

I wasn’t completely pumped about Picking Cotton, just because it’s not typically my genre of choice. I figured I might as well start it yesterday…and I also finished it. It was very engaging and difficult to set down. I finished it in about six hours, so I promise it’s not the kind of book that will own your life for weeks at a time!

I was definitely not excited about having summer reading, but I ended up really liking the book! Besides, it was an easy read and didn’t take very long to read, so that was a definite plus :)

oh yeah THAT ha
Hmm I’ll have to go and buy it, I’m reading something else now, but yeah it actually looks engaging based on the reviews. Sadly I’ll have to miss orientation and all the fun events happening from the 18th to the 22nd, and I’ll actually be arriving around the time of the reading discussion, so it’s like fate, I better participate in that at least lol

You guys know the summer reading is optional right? I didn’t do mine last year, and didn’t miss anything…don’t think you’re gonna be at some sort of disadvantage or something by having not read it…I know they try to shove it down your throat, but don’t be bullied into reading it if you don’t want to.

(Not to say it’s a bad book because I haven’t read it. And I’m not trying to talk you out of reading it if you already wanted to, just trying to say not reading it isn’t a big deal.)

As far as clubs go, I’ll plug in a few.

1) Carolina Fever: If you’re a fan of UNC athletics, join this one. Go to all the assigned games and you’ll be guaranteed basketball tickets! Going to the dook (ALWAYS spell it like this. ALWAYS.) game as a freshman was so so so awesome.

2) The Daily Tar Heel: If you’re into writing/journalism, this is a no-brainer. It’s not hard to get on (they always need more staff) and it’s an interesting experience.

And a lot of people I know joined the General Alumni Association, but I didn’t so I can’t say much about it other than it’s popular with freshmen. Really there are TONS of things going on all the time, so you’ll assuredly find some things you’ll be into.

mpittman17: Do you have any experience with / knowledge of the investment society? It sounds very interesting, and I’d like to join.

I assume they assign every member of Carolina Fever a different set of assigned games? If so, about how many?

blue_box: Sorry, can’t help you with that one.

awayfromitall:

All members of Fever are assigned the same games. There are 4 distributions that usually last 1 month each (roughly). Each distribution there are a set number of games you can attend for points (each game is worth either 20 or 30 points usually). Each distribution contains anywhere from 8-12 games (roughly).

You’ll be attending things like field hockey, men & women’s soccer, and football at the beginning. Later, of course, other sports get added in (women’s bball and volleyball).

Your first distribution points will determine if you get bball tickets to the first 3 or 4 games. The second will determine if you get ticks to the 3 or 4 games after that. And so on. To determine if you get tickets to the dook game, ALL of your points will be taken into account.

Now you don’t have to go to EVERY event to get basketball tickets. You just have to make sure your point totals are within the top 240 people each distribution. More points = better tickets. Same for the dook game.

But there’s a lot more to Fever than basketball tickets. You get to meet new people…Fever often gives out free food at games (not ALL the time)…you get 2 shirts (one for fall and one for spring).

Hope that clears things up a bit.

mpittman17:

thanks for all the info you’ve provided thus far, but, if you don’t mind, I have two questions.

Do you know anything about St. Anthony Hall? I’m very interested in joining a literary society and as far as I know, that is the most prominent one on campus.

Also, as a transfer student, I’ve been assigned to live in Odum Village. Am I screwed? Is there any kind of social scene on that part of campus (i.e. community events, etc.)? However, I must emphasize, I’m not interested in frat parties and the like.

Thanks in advance for your help.

bump
advice from any current unc student would be welcome.

So, every community will have community events at least once a month, definitely by the RAs and usually by the community government a couple of times a semester. Your RA has to do at least 1 event every month (it varies from community to community). Now, Odum does tend to be upper-classmen/graduate students so turnout at said events may not be too good, but that is the case for almost all of these things at every community.

As far as a good group to join, I highly recommend the Campus Y. There are so many committees and cool people there, it is kinda ridiculous. They have different fundraising dinners there through out the week too, which are always fun to go to. Check it out!

[Welcome to the Campus Y at UNC Chapel Hill](http://campus-y.unc.edu/)

My advice would be to go to Fall Fest and put your name on the listserv for anything that sounds remotely interesting - then you’ll get all the emails from the clubs with updates. It’s a good way to knock out a whole bunch of stuff at once!

babytitian:

Ok St. A’s (as it is referred to)…I honestly don’t want to offend anyone, but I’m going to give you my honest opinion/assessment of St. Anthony Hall. Pretty much everyone in it is…weird. The hall is very strange and therefore attracts strange people. My former roommate was in it, so I know haha. He often cross-dressed for parties and the such, and the friends I heard about in the organization were also very out there. I mean they had a “formal” where everyone dressed as Disney characters. Yeah…I don’t feel like I have to say anything else. They will send out mass emails and try to recruit hard anyways though haha

I don’t think Odum is a very happening social scene(?). But it is near South Campus, so you can find things going on if you throw yourself out there.

Hope that helps.

Also, I second jambaby’s advice about Fall Fest. Great way to get involved in things about campus.

I concur about fallfest. Many of the organisations listed on the unc website are either defunct or have a crap, dated website with broken email addresses. Fallfest is your main and maybe only chance to get in touch with organisations that are actually active!

I didn’t sign up for a few that I meant to, and ended up spending half the year half-heartedly trying to find them.

There’s also a ton of free food at Fall Fest, so you can eat and feel productive at the same time! Ha ha. Last year they had corndogs… Oh yeah. : )

mpittman17: that was seriously hilarious, everyone dressed as Disney characters??hah Dont mean to be mean either, but that IS weird and deliciously funny,I’d pay to see that once. It´s ok we are all weirdos in our own ways, some more than others but well…
Thanks for the advice, as much as I like lit I´ll make sure no one ever recruits me for that hahah

babytitian: I live in Odum too and I´m excited about it! we´ll be just fine you´ll see

Sooo Fall Fest…I´m afraid I´m gonna miss it. I have to arrive on the 23rd
