Orientation and Health/Immunization Form

Quick question. My son is attending orientation Monday and Tuesday next week. I do not have is health form completed and signed by his physician. I saw conflicting notices - 1) It’s due at orientation 2) it can be submitted at orientation. Anyone know if he will not be allowed to register for classes if he doesn’t have the form on Monday?

aaaah! I need to get those forms too. He needs his by the 6th though. I knew he needed the vax stuff but not the health form. Where is the health form?

I think they can still register but per the form there will be a late fee assessment if not submitted before classes start…?

While the doc may not have time to fill out the Maryland form in time for Monday, it might not be a bad idea just to bring a copy of the immunization records from the physician’s office (they should be able to make the 1-2 page copies quickly if that’s all you are asking on short notice) so you have something to turn in.

Here is the list of everything you need to bring to orientation http://www.orientation.umd.edu/FirstYearPackingList.pdf

This next form is NOT required for orientation, but is something your kids will have to fill out if they ever go to the health center. It’s not a bad idea to print one out and help them fill it out so they know how to answer the questions. I know it seems like straight-forward, common sense to adults, but a lot of times kids get intimidated by forms and they actually may not know the answers about family history…

Also, this is a serious heads up…school ID photo is taken on Day 2 of orientation. They should actually take that into consideration when packing their outfit for that day as they will have to live with that photo…during my son’s orientation, there was a serious downpour and I am not exaggerating when I say his pic looked like he was a drowned rat. So, if there is ANY chance of rain, pack an umbrella or hat to help reduce that look…

Thank you so much. I have printed everything and am having DS take it over to the pediatrician’s office today. I’m also going to have him pick up two copies of the immunization form to take with him. If there are shots he needs to get for the academic year that he does not yet have (and I don’t know if this is the case) but will be getting at his well check in July, do you think that is sufficient?

Thanks for the advice about the school ID photo too!

I talked to the Orientation department. Students do not need the immunization form at orientation - the will be able to register for classes. If it’s not in by drop/add dates, they won’t be able to drop/add. So don’t worry about orientation, but get it in soon!

@vandygrad87 Should be fine - as long as he gets them by the time classes start, he should be good to go.

WARNING TO ALL REGARDING MATH PLACEMENT TEST:
While the school can be flexible about immunization form for orientation, they are NOT flexible about the math placement test. Seriously, if your student does not have it done before orientation, they will NOT let him/her sign up for classes until it is done. They will make them take it right then and there. So, while everyone else is signing up and grabbing the first openings in the preferred class times, your student will be delayed by having to take the math placement test.

They truly do not care how brilliant anyone is in math, including those intending to major in math. I still remember the hullabaloo created at my son’s orientation by one student who tried to say they didn’t think they needed to take it…oh yeah, I can still hear the mom screaming over the delay it created for her precious baby…no one, absolutely no one is exempt as an incoming freshman. Funny now but I’m sure they didn’t think so.

Also, remember that the highest “placement” is MATH140, but if you have the AP credits, AND that placement result, you will be able to sign up for the higher math.

So excited for all you incoming Terps…it’s gonna be the best four years of your life! Enjoy every moment and make the most of every opportunity - it really goes by way too fast!!!

Thank you @maryversity! I did have DS do the math placement test and so that is done. I also had him drop the forms at the pediatrician’s office so those are to be done as well.

Thank you so much for being such a huge part of CC and the UMD-CP areas. You are such a big help!

@vandygrad87 - you’ll have to let me know if they are still showing a certain video to parents from The Onion…if not, I’ll post the link, because it is way too funny to not share (but don’t want to ruin the surprise if they are still showing it)

I’ll let you know! We head out to UMD bright and early in the morning!

Oooh - yay! Have a GREAT time!

Okay so I am back from Orientation- I only did the day yesterday so DS is still there. We had a snafu when we arrived - he apparently was NOT registered although I have no idea how that happened because he and I sat here together and registered a while ago. I DID wonder why we received no further info but just figured it was a large school and found what I needed online. Anyway, he sweated bullets while we waited to see if an adviser was willing to fit him in, or else we would have to leave and all the other Orientation Dates were full. Plus this was an Honors one and his roommate to-be was there also that session. Fortunately after an hour of waiting it did all work out, but we missed a good half of the initial welcome speech. So if it was in that, we missed it. Otherwise I didn’t see a video by the Onion. Feel free to post a link if you can!

I’m glad things worked out for your son! And no, it was not shown in first half hour…it was in a parents’ only session, for obvious reasons, lol…here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu4zMvE6FH4

LOL That is too funny!! No, they talked about helicopter parents and some other type of over involved parent that I can’t remember what it was. But no funny video like that!! It is probably considered too offensive now ya know!
