Orientation date and AP test grades

I got into the U of M honors college, and I'm signing up for orientation soon, which is pretty much any time in the months of June and July (it's three days long). At orientation, you pretty much pick all your classes. Now, I know somehow honors orientation is separate from the actual orientation, I think, but I'll figure that out later. That's not what I'm asking about.

The problem is that I won't get my AP test scores until July, and I feel like I need to know how many credits I have out of the way so that I can pick what classes I'm going to take. I'm taking 3 AP classes this year, and I've already passed 3 tests, so if I get another three 4's, it'd be significantly more credit.

So I WOULD schedule it for late July, but I've been told by several people to schedule orientation on one of the earlier dates, since classes fill up pretty fast.

I guess what I'm assuming I'll do is still do it in June and just make it clear to them that I'm still waiting on AP test results, and go back and change my classes based on what I need, but I don't really know much about the whole process. Anyone have any insight?

You can change your classes at any time after you register during orientation. You will be better off signing up for the earlier orientation. Sign up for classes based on how you project you will do on your AP test and make necessary adjustments after the scores are released.

Honors orientation is not separate from actual orientation but there are parts of orientation where honors students meet separately just as there are parts where engineering students or nursing students meet separately.

What AP tests are you taking? Many AP tests will not get you out of classes. You can also switch out of classes after your orientation date.

Check out the AP guidelines and schedule according to how you think you’ll do. You can change your class schedule if necessary at any point before classes start (and even a few weeks after).

I’m taking AP Chemistry, AP Literature & Composition, and AP Psychology. I believe all three of them could potentially affect what classes I take this year.

AP Lit & Comp will have no impact on what you take because you will need to take Great Books or a substiute regardless of how you score. All that the AP test is gets you departmental credit that isn’t worth much. AP Psych will place you out of Pysch 111 - you can either sign up for this class and drop it if you place out or you can sign up for something else and register for it if you do not place out. If Schreier has a waitlist when you get to orientation, I would sign up for the waitlist - you may know the score by the time you clear the waitlist. Chem has a placement exam which should help - I think you go into Orgo if you place out. If you aren’t sure I would err on the side of assuming you will place out of Chem because it will be harder to get into a better section of the higher level because sophomores will have already registered and taken up a bunch of the spots.

@res ipsa, I was typing up a response just as you posted, haha. Looks like you beat me to it!

I will just add one more thing. I took regular chem in high school and was able to place into orgo from the placement exam. I don’t think it should be very hard given your stronger background in chem. This would result in the same placement as a 4/5 on the AP test.
