Anyone recall what the Orientation fee was? Not listed on the website yet. Just trying to get a ball park figure here.

I think in the past it was $125 for the student and $50 per parent (if the parent is staying elsewhere). Can’t imagine it will vary much from that.

I’m sorry, orientation fee for what?

Staying in the dorm, meals, materials, social events…

Orientation is not required, btw.

whose orientation? what’s the occasion? I’m confused, folks.

Freshmen Orientation in June.

Some schools do orientation a few days to a week before classes start. Tulane does it in June instead. Students that do Honors Weekend have less need for June Orientation, but as I say any orientation session is optional. Those that choose not to attend can start registering for classes in July.

Also Tulane has a thing called NOLA experience which is the week before classes start. It is not an orientation session at all, but is rather a chance to do a lot of fun things around New Orleans ranging from the food of New Orleans to camping out in the Bayous. It is more of a bonding experience with classmates than orientation to Tulane in the usual sense one would think of that. And a chance for a lot of fun that takes advantage of going to school in such a unique city. Space is limited, so it can happen that some cannot attend that might want to. But I think the program has grown, so perhaps that is less of an issue than before.

This is really helpful, fc. So if D doesn’t do Honors Weekend, which I think she will do, she could do freshman orientation in June for $125 plus airfare. What’s included in the $125? How many days/nights does it last? Would a parent make her own arrangements for food, lodging, and activities?

I checked out NOLA Experience at

https://tulane.edu/studentaffairs/orientation/nola/

and it looks like a lot of fun.

NOLA Experience has been well received by the participants, and not just for the content. They seem to also really appreciate having a quick group of friends before everyone else even arrives.

TO answer your question, yes she can do June Orientation either in lieu of or in addition to Honors Weekend. My D did both, but that was more because my wife hadn’t really seen the campus in about 25 years so it was a chance for her to attend Orientation almost as much as it was for my D to just have another chance to visit. One or the other is really all that is needed. They do have on campus apartments the parents can sign up to stay in, but most parents choose to stay in hotels and make all their own arrangements. Both HW and Orientation are two days and one night. There are some activities planned for parents, but of course these are optional as well. Here is a tentative schedule for HW: [Tulane Admission: Visit](http://www.admission.tulane.edu/honorsweekend/schedule-tent.php) You can see some of the parent activities there. I think during June Orientation it is somewhat similar for parents.

Oh, and you asked about the $125. It covers meals, the room (Tulane provides the linens, etc.), entertainment for the evening, and other materials provided to the students. It is the same for the parents. If you stay at Tulane it is $125 total, if you don’t it is $50 to cover meals, materials you are given, and whatever events they plan. If you don’t want to do any of that but instead just drop your child off and then do your own thing, then of course you don’t have to pay the $50.

thanks, fc. I need to start giving HW some planning.

ignore just testing something out with this new format…
