Thought I’d post some of my Orientation Notes for those going next week and for future appointees…

The week we attended (2nd wk, 16/17) there were probably 200 appointee’s there (plus parents). Week 1 had alot more I heard…

9500 students applied to USAFA. 1500 appointments are already out there, with 600 accepted so far (only 60 regrets to date, but it’s still two weeks to May 1). They’ll shoot to have 1300 come on I-Day, 1060 of which will be first time applicants from High Schools (rest from colleges, enlisted, prep, etc).

22% of the class will be Intercollegiate Athletes (IC’s). And based on what we heard from our coach, they’ll put in 20 EXTRA hours of effort per week to be an IC vs a std student (though some of those pratice hours will override some of the afternoon “squadron training” regular cadets get put thru).

The value of an AFA degree was pegged at $ 300K, over a million if you get thru UPT.

If you want to buy socks along with the Boots, bring a SEPERATE money order for $ 9.12 / pair (boots = $ 99.86 plus a few bucks in fees for the MO if you buy it there…)

July 15th is Doolie Day Out. August 8th is the Acceptance Parade, and Parents Weekend is Labor Day (come in on Thursday night, see your kid Friday for parade, etc. Cadets are released to leave campus after the football game Sat afternoon, and must be back 7 pm Monday).

For those of you considering putting 529 Education Plan money into thier AFA accounts, there is a $ 10K limit…

TONS of more stuff discussed but some of the above tidbits were the most interesting and perhaps worthy to others that might not have attended orientation…
