Hi, I need to be back home with the younger son, before older one starts the international orientation at USC on 16th August. Younger son's school starts 16th too and we have to fly 20 hours.

My question is - do they move into their dorms before the 16th or after? Is it ok to leave before that? My husband can stay back to help him move in but we need to figure out his return date in this case. Pls help, thanks.

We are international also. There is no housing provided for the International orientation. You must arrange your own lodging at a hotel. We are staying at the Raddison which is on the edge of campus. It is my understanding that the international students can not move in early. Move in date for all is Aug 18th. We had the same issue when my older daughter went to college. I stayed with my older daughter and got her moved in to college and my husband came back earlier with our younger child.

Are you positive on that ecymom? I thought you could move in a few days earlier under certain circumstances, one of them being international orientation. However, that’d only solve the housing situation for your son as you’d need somewhere to stay. The best thing to do would be to call housing and get their official say.

Thanks for the post alamemom. My daughter got a brochure in the mail a week ago “Orientation 2010”. Under the Travel and Accommodations section “Overnight Accommodations” it states "Overnight housing is provided in a university residence hall for all student participants during the first-year Orientation sessions (with exception of International Student orientation) I was pretty surprised. So, I was glad to see your post and will contact housing and post if she can in fact stay on campus and what the additional fees are. It might be pretty lonely though. The International program ends at 5:00.

I was surprised, too. I thought the whole point of having the International orientation last was so they could just stay until school started! It hopefully won’t be too lonely - theoretically there will be other lonely Internationals in the same situation to meet. It is likely those requesting to stay on campus will all be housed in the same area (though it is pretty vague in the passage I quoted if they are likely tp get a place to stay). And she will be an expert by the time the other freshman arrive on campus! They will be wandering aimlessly around, lost and confused, and she can make friends by showing them where things are.

I believe if you get early move-in, you will be put in your actual room unless there’s some complication (ie if they need to do anything like painting or something). However, USC’s campus is small enough that regardless of where you’re living, you can still easily meet up with the other people you meet in orientation and then just hang out together, you just won’t be sleeping in the same building (or at least with everyone).

For other internationals who might be reading this thread: I emailed housing and they emailed back saying they will not be approving any early arrivals until August as we get closer to move in. They added they do not foresee any problems with it. As akalboy posted, if you do want to stay on campus for international orientation then it will be in your actual room. I am not sure of the additional cost but early arrival for students in the domestic orientation is $60 so maybe it will be the same. Thanks for asking the question Pixeljig. I love CC for this reason. A great way to help each other out.
