So my dd has decided on USC. We went to look at orientation dates and noticed the question about staying in a dorm - is that just for the student? I think she would like to stay with other students but I wasn't sure if they put parents up somewhere else or if I should book a hotel.

I can’t remember if parents had the dorm option, but honestly I would have had no interest in staying in a dorm (twin-size bed? Dorm mattress? No wifi? No tv?) so I got a hotel room.

Given that I had a hotel room, DD then decided she would rather stay at the hotel.

I don’t how many kids actually stay in a dorm for orientation.

I stayed in a dorm for my orientation. Parents are allowed to stay in the dorms as well. (At least they were in 2011.)

There was wifi and TV available.

I think like 10-11 students stayed in the dorms out of about 200 students at the orientation on my day.

My parents didn’t go to orientation with me, which is why I chose to stay in the dorms. It’s a fun way to meet people and I actually ended up getting on-campus housing as a sophomore because I stayed in the dorms for orientation, so it worked out really well for me. The grand majority, however, stay in hotels or drive in from out-of-town.

Thanks AUGirl - I will see what my DD wants to do.

AUGirl, how did staying in the dorms for orientation help you get sophomore housing? Will students enroll in their classes during orientation?

I’ll defer to augirl for housing, but to other question… yes you are advised and registered for classes at orientation. You will walk away with a schedule.

When I stayed in housing, they told us we would have guaranteed housing if we wore a housing t-shirt to Orientation the next day and if we turned in a comment card.

That turned out to actually be a lottery. Last spring they said that students who did that at Orientation would be entered in for a lottery for first-choice housing. My name got picked.

You do enroll in classes during orientation.
