orientation questions

What should i pack for orientation? Also, an NEU post said a mini fan was optional, but if i choose to bring that will i be stuck carrying it around all day long or are you able to drop things off in the room you stay in overnight? And how do you get paired up with your roommate for the night? Is it like alphabetical, the order you arrive, your choice...? Sorry for all these questions but if you could also tell me what you did at orientation and if you enjoyed it that would be great!

Fan is the most important thing to pack - those rooms are deadly hot. Don’t know how they pair with roommate but last year my daughter stayed the one night and she went to her assigned room first thing to drop off her stuff - the other girl had already dropped her stuff off. They keep you busy until very late at night and start early in the morning - my daughter went to bed and roommate was not yet there and when she woke up the girl was still sleeping - so she actually never met her! Bring clothes for the second day (casual - shorts and t-shirt are fine), toiletries (including flips for shower and something to carry stuff to bathroom in since it is down the hall), (they supply bedding- including I think a pillow - check the what to bring list on the website - I know they had one last year), a pen and some paper to take notes, your id (passport or drivers license so you can get your husky card), your AP scores (if you have any), and a fan (clip on or small portable one). If you are work study you need to bring those forms also (I-9 etc.)

Have fun!

Thought of one more important thing - bring your smart phone - this way you can load the various NEU apps, connect to facebook to join the various groups and like their sites, and use it as an alarm clock to wake you up! (you will be very tired - it will be easy to sleep late that morning)

I didn’t even have a cell phone yet when I was at orientation! That was only 3 years ago, and I was behind the curve on getting a cell phone, but that still makes me feel old.

I wouldn’t stress out about it too much. A change of clothes, toiletries. I didn’t bring a fan (wasn’t exactly ideal to drag that across the country), but I don’t think it was terribly hot when I was there. There are decent-sized windows you can open up to let air through, at least.

I don’t recall having to carry stuff around. When you arrive, I think you check in to your room right away, and you don’t check out until right before you leave, so you can leave your stuff there the whole time.

I’d definitely bring something to take notes, though, and probably a small bag to carry stuff in. I think you’ll accumulate some swag (and plenty of papers…) throughout the time. They’re going to throw a lot of information at you, and it can be hard to keep it all straight if you don’t write stuff down.

I just went to orientation this past Monday and bring a fan! It is ridiculously hot in those rooms and while it cooled off a bit once the window was left open all day, it was still super hot. Most people aren’t in their room much, and most of my friends didn’t meet their roommates (I did, briefly) but the fan may help you sleep that night. I didn’t bring one and regret it

I have another unrelated question about orientation. How far in advanced do we need to take the language placement exams? I haven’t gotten regarding them yet, and I’m going to the July 29th-30th orientation. I would rather wait until the week before because I’m really busy with work and other stuff until then, but I don’t want to miss my chance in case there is a specific time frame within which I need to complete it.

Are you talking about the online placement exams? I would confirm with them, but I think you just have to do it before your orientation session so that the information is on record before you schedule your classes. (For me this ended up being irrelevant since I tested out of all the German they offer. :frowning: )

Ok. Thanks :)

Are there placement tests other than for language? I know a lot of other schools have english and math but i havent gotten any notices about that.

Also, on the what to bring checklist there are things such as birth certificate, social security, etc if you are applying for work study. Does anyone remember if that is taken care of early or not? Because i really dont want to be carrying around the original of my birth certificate all day and be worried about losing it. In other words, will i have a chance to drop it in the dorm i will be spending the night in or find one of my parents and let them run it to the car?

No other placement tests.
Drop all your stuff in the dorm first thing the first morning and then I think there is a special time the second day when they take care of the work/study thing (so you can bring the documents to just that event and then safely put them away again.)
