A student must first make the $400 deposit for enrollment before they can sign up for an orientation date?

That’s what it seems like to me. However, I am not absolutely certain about that.

quick question, when is orientation?

Woah - don’t confuse “orientation” with “admitted student” days/programs. Admitted student days do not require enrollment (and associated deposit). Admitted student days are an opportunity to take a closer look to help you in the decision process. You can either attend an open house by itself http://www.admissions.umd.edu/admitted/AdmittedStudentOpenHouses.php
or an overnight stay with the open house

Orientation actually comes later - after you have committed - and is when you pick your classes. That’s why you have to make the deposit for enrollment for orientation since that is specifically for students that are committed to attending and don’t start until June. http://www.orientation.umd.edu/dates.html

Maryversity that is exactly what I was asking…thanks
