To those who have already attended orientation, I just have a couple of questions. What is the breakdown of events? In general, are parents present throughout? Where will the students be sleeping? And any other answers anyone can provide. Thank you!

Orientation mostly consists of ice breakers, team building exercises, a skit/performance from the orientation leaders, and signing up for classes. The students sleep in one of the dorms (I was in hale hall), and the parents are there only for the opening speech and for pickup.

Overall it’s a bit of a waste of time, but it can be pretty fun if you meet the right people. The only serious thing you do is sign up for classes, so if you take a look at what’s recommended for your major and what changes you may want to make, you should be all set.

Is there anything I should do to prepare to sign up for my classes besides knowing the sample curriculum of my major? Like should I know the exact days and times I want each course or will the adviser guide me through everything? Thank you

If you go to the student admin login page, you should see a link to a chart listing information about the classes for each term and campus location. Choose storrs fall 2013 and look for the classes you want/need to take based on the curriculum guide for your major. You might consider looking up professor ratings at ratemyproffesors.com and checking other details such as preferred times of there is more than one section.

There’s not a ton of options first semester, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much. You should basically just make sure the classes you want to take don’t have time conflicts. They’re going to hold your hand a lot at orientation anyways (a faculty member and student from your major should be there), but it always helps to sort out any potential questions for them ahead of time, as it’s pretty hectic and the professors are already very busy.
