Orientation

I finished the pre orientation thing online. Do we have to make a list of potential classes that we will take or are we doing that at orientation?

it is advised to do so so that in your orientation you have a much easier time enrolling in your classes

I’m not sure which classes I need to take for my major and breadth requirements. My major is business economics and I have been placed into the eng 4

ok well, i am not a business/econ major, so i cannot advise you on that part, however, for the eng 4, i think you should do summer bridge to get it over with, BUT if you will do so, PLEASE make sure to get at least a B+ because otherwise, your gpa is doom, actually, nevermind, just wait until regular school year, trust me, I completely 100% regret taking summer bridge because it hurt my gpa so damn much that 'till this day it is still the same, and i’m a junior!! i had a C in eng 4 and that brought my gpa to a 2.0, two years later: 2.090 -___________-

Thanks for the advice!! Do you have any suggestions before I go to orientation or choose my classes?

no problem!, well, i would say that you at least try to have an idea of what you want your classes to be, i personally never made a schedule prior to orientation and turned out alright, once you’re there you will receive a lot of help from your adviser, also, try to balance your courses, e.g. breadth and major requirements. Also, DO NOT take your classes for granted, pay attention, even if you’re not into the subject because if not you will end up with a low g.p.a. like mine! -__________- i say begin taking 4 classes in your winter quarter, something I should have done! and well, just try to live up your years in college to the max b/c trust me, they WILL fly by! i still feel like it was yesterday when I was in your position! now i’m a third year! wow, anyways, good luck and have lots of fun, b/c orientation is only ONCE! lol

Thanks I really appreciate the help!!

No problem! any more questions?!

Not as of now I’ll let you know if I do!

I finished Eng 4L first quarter this year, and I can tell you, the wait after the final is HELL.

It works on the basis of pass or fail, and assuming you get a C (maybe C-?) or higher in the class, your fate will depend on the final. The final is not given a numerical grade (at least not to students), and is either an F or an A, no in between. If you have a A+ in the class, and fail the final, you fail the whole course and must retake it again. If you are failing the class and pass the final, you still fail. Worse yet, there’s no way you can prepare for the final since the essay topic isn’t provided early.

You find out about your pass/fail status during Winter Break (if you take it first quarter, and takes about a week into the break for notification. Hopefully you can sleep through the wait…

Does anyone know what we need to take to UCR for orientation? Also how do we know what classes we are supposed to take for the university, major, and breadth requirements?

I’ll tell you, making a list of potential class schedules beforehand really helps. I dont remember all the details because I went to an early orientation session this year but on the second day, my group almost had only 30 minutes to figure everything out. Already a lot of classes were full so it was really hard to figure out how to make your schedule work / classes fit. I prepared ahead of time ( I thought it was required that we make a potential schedule before orientation ) so I had everything figured out easy. My friends who didnt prepare took awhile and most didnt get into what they wanted to get into.

Oh and there’s like a list of what to bring somewhere on the UCR orientation website. I think it should pop up easy if you google it. It’s not much really. & if you log into your growl thing, go under degree check or something and I think that’ll tell you. If you can’t figure it out, the people at orientation tell you how to figure everything out on the second day. No sweat.

This was me 5 years ago or so, but from what I remember…for orientation, it’s helpful to bring your high school transcript. It’s suggested just because some people have AP credits and what not that can help knock off a few units and/or required classes right from the get go.

As for the orientation itself, it’s an overnight thing, so bring your typical change of clothes, toiletries - definitely don’t forget sunscreen.

But yeah like previously stated, there will be lots of people to assist you on orientation day, so don’t worry. Also orientation will give you a chance to make friends already, notably in your orientation group, so keep all that in mind and have a good time. And just as a warning, the food the dorms serve up for orientation is a ONE TIME THING. Don’t expect food that good throughout the school year. Haha
