orientation

Next week May 17th and 18th for me. I'm exicited and kind of scared because I think I might have to end up driving there alone.

I'm staying in the dorms. I hope it's fun :-).

How is everyone doing? The FSU forum went dead after decisions we're out.

Get ready for four hours of nothing.

Hi bbecker, your right the decisions got handed out and it went a little quieter. This though is a pretty hectic time with graduation, senior ball, final dance recital and competitions, and all those thinks that HS seniors occupy themselves with during the final weeks. All of her friends have gotten their decisions back and also made their selections so when the gang comes to the house which is fairly often it's a pretty laid back time. Lindsey has her UCF orientation on July 12-13th and has gotten a contract for on campus housing, she will find her roomate and dorm selection in early July. School starts at UCF on August 20th so there isn't much time left to plan drop off's. fitting out the rooms ect. The same stuff you will be doing soon. That's about what's new. Have a great time at your orientation.

I'm so glad that Lindsey and you have found the school that is fit for her.
I'm glad you responded Ray, I have been wondering how everything was going.

Yeah, it's been pretty laid back now, everyone knows what they are doing and where they are going so no more panicing for moment.

I think FSU starts aug 20th as well, my mom actually took two days off from work to drop me off at my summer session 17&18, classes start june 20th. As soon as I find out when I need to be dropped off for fall I'll let her know, maybe she will come again.

I believe you will be able to move into the dorms for FALL on AUG-18 and enjoy Seminole Sensation Week until classes start on AUG-27. They had many fun activities last year which you can see at http://ssweek.fsu.edu/.

You should review the information at http://newnole.fsu.edu/ prior to attending orientation. My son stayed in Salley during orientation and met people, listened to many presentations, signed up for his FSU card and registered for classes. The parents attend different sessions than the student for the most part. My husband and son had visited FSU before orientation but I had never been there so I really enjoyed the visit and informative programs.

Cybermom, did you found all the parent's orientation helpful? Any not to miss or any you would skip?

Well, as you can tell, I enjoy researching via the FSU website and CC on my own so I knew a lot of the information already but I still enjoyed clarifying some of my questions.

They had seminars explaining financial/scholarship/prepaid information, the FSU card, housing, meal plans, resources available for physical and mental health, campus security, activities/clubs/recreation, choosing majors/advising, the international program, liberal studies requirements and skits on freshmen pit falls. I enjoyed touring the campus, eating in the cafeterias, seeing the dorms and meeting other parents going through the same experience.

The most important items to do while there is make sure your student gets the FSUcard connected to the Suntrust student account and put some money on the smartchip and also to make sure that your student understands how to use Blackboard and register/change their course schedule.

My husband said he really enjoyed the talk given by the dean. They gave a lot of tips on what to expect.

Get your FSU ID card at Preview. Avoid the lines at Orientation.

Do we have to get our FSU ID at orientation and not any other time?

Once you're accepted, probably most any time, but it'd help to hit the ground running, so to speak.

The FSUID CARD is very important! It is your photo id, a debit card, a smart card, a library card, a phone card, a meal ticket, a free movie pass, a free concert pass, athletic event access, building access, a vending/laundry/copier/printer machine discount card and probably more. You also will want to open a free Suntrust student account at the branch next to the bookstore which gets attached to the card where extra financial aid/scholarship money is deposited after all your university bills are paid.
The card costs $10 initially and $15 for a replacement.

The FSUCard Center is located in the Call Street Parking Garage on the corner of Woodward Ave. and West Call Street. They are open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM to assist you. Cashiers hours are from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. The phone number is (850) 644-7777.

A different comment, we got a blurb in the mail saying don't buy regular sheets as they won't fit the beds, extra long sheets are needed. I don't know if this is the same throughout Florida but I thought I'd pass it along.

Yes most dorm beds use extra long twin sheets which are available at most linen stores. At FSU, they have a company that offers to deliver a brand new rug in a choice of colors to fit your dorm room before you move in. This was worth the $99 price for my son's room in Deviney since the linoleum floors are pretty gross. I don't think it is worth the money to buy their sheet/towel/toiletry packages that are offered to you.

I heard the lines are long, and you need one before you can register. My DS is going to the orientation just after Memorial Day, so they will be closed the day we arrive in Tallahassee. So.... the FSU card office said to show up Tuesday at 7:30 a.m., they will try to open at 7:45 a.m., and their goal is to get the students out before the first orientation session at 9:00 a.m. (Then another line forms at the lunch break...)

The location is next to the FSU bookstore on Woodward, which is across the street from the Student Union where the first orientation session is located.

Looks like a 'standing breakfast' for us!
