Orientation

You may want to double check to see if a crock pot is allowed. I know it sounds silly but Housing has specific restrictions on appliances (with a heat source).

Will do but I’m pretty sure that I got that idea from another parent on this forum…hmmm. On the list of things to check :)

Want to find out if a toaster is allowed. Also wonder if some appliances may be allowed in some complexes and not others. Talking about the super suite honors dorms here.

Students can have toasters, coffee makers, blenders and crock pots. Check out this link from the Alabama’s housing website:

Thanks, momreads. Didn’t know if only certain dorms allowed certain appliances. Thanks for the link. Will check it out.

Riverside has the convection ovens, but the Lakesides and Ridgecrests have conventional ovens and stovetops (ranges). I’ve never tried to broil something in one of the ovens, but I doubt it would be allowed or a good idea considering the fire alarms (remember to keep the fan on while cooking in the common area kitchen). Note that some papers housing sends out say that toasters are not allowed, but they are allowed.

Looks like Bama has gotten more lenient in recent years. When DS1 started in Fall 07, some of these items were not allowed.

Electrical Appliances
Residence halls must comply with University policy, which restricts each individual residence
hall room to 1800 watts usage at any time. In addition, no single appliance can exceed 1000
watts of usage. Residents can use approved appliances, stereos, lights and other electrical
devices, but it is up to the residents of each room to decide how they wish to use their wattage.
Because of the fire hazard they represent, all two-prong extension cords, plug adapters, and
halogen lamps and bulbs are prohibited. Residents using extension cords must use grounded
three-wire extension cords and/or surge protectors. Space heaters are prohibited for use in
residence hall rooms. Residents must report all electrical problems experienced in their rooms
(e.g., tripped circuit breakers) to the Resident Advisor or the Community Office.
Residents are encouraged to use appliances that are in good repair and functioning safely.
Generally speaking, appliances that have an exposed heating element or exposed heating coil are
not approved for use because of the potential for fire if something comes in contact with it.
Additionally, appliances that can generate enough heat to bring oil to a boil are not permitted,
again for their potential to cause a fire. The list below is NOT exhaustive, but does list some
examples of appliances that have been approved for use in the residence halls as well as
examples of the appliances that are not permitted. Some of the appliances listed below as
prohibited have been determined to present unacceptable fire safety hazards. Residents will be
held financially and contractually responsible for damages incurred by use of prohibited items or
unsafe use of permitted ones.
If you have questions about a specific appliance, please contact your Community Director or
email us housing@sa.ua.edu with your question.

Can I just say that as I was browsing the list, I cracked up when I saw “fog and smoke machine.” Just seemed a little out of place with the rest of the items :)

Thanks for the info M2CK!

damn!
I was just thinking of buying DS a fog machine, you know, just in case…

Are there smoke detectors in every suite?

I must say, these are much more lenient than my day. We were only allowed a “hot pot” which was a small coffee pot looking thing that we could make ramen noodles in. We didn’t have microwaves back when I went to college.

It is mentioned that there is a convection oven, and I did see it, in the Riverside community kitchen, but is there also an extra fridge or two, like there is in the Ridgecrest community kitchen?

Also, if I remember correctly, there did seem to be a lot of outdoor grills at Riverside. Are those also available at Ridgecrest and Lakeside?

There are definitely smoke detectors in the suites.

Ridgecrest South has grills, I think. I don’t think Lakeside, does, but they can use the ones at Riverside.

I do think that all the community kitchens have another fridge. You can watch the videos on the housing webpages and see if they show.

AL34: would that be for the wicked Halloween party he’s planning on throwing ;)?
