OSU (Ohio State University) vs VT (Virginia Tech) for CS

Hi guys I gotta decide one university between these two and I would like to know your opinion in regards CS. I am international and thing would be that cost would turn out similar for both the university, so that point is out of the debate. I don't care about funds or loans.

I am going for undergraduation i.e. 4 years and I can't afford staying another year or transfering after first year. Thing is I didn't get admitted in CS (College of Engineering) for OSU, but in CIS (Computer Information and Sciences). People have said that it would be easy to take classes of CS and eventually transfer within d same university; still its kind of risky.

Anyways, so what its like now:

Rural (VT) vs Urban (OSU) [I can't say which is better for me bt I do want options for entertainment or exploration, in breaks]

CS in VT vs CS in OSU [Please consider 4 year period]

Job/internship opportunities in VT vs OSU [I think I may be able to get internship in columbus itself as oppose to blacksburg... So, that would be nice. But, still don't mind moving out of city/state for job]

Overall life n experience in VT vs OSU [any other points you know through city or university... do add]

I really hope someone can help me in my dilemma. You can reply anything related and I would be really happy to hear.

Thank You..!

I can’t give much information on OSU. Two of my kids visited. It is a massive college. They both wanted larger universities but OSU was too big for them. OSU grads tend to love it. It rains a lot. The students and guides were all constantly joking about that.

I went to VT. It is on a plateau in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lot’s of hiking, camping, kayaking, fishing, etc.,. is nearby. Winters are cold and very windy. The town that surrounds it is fantastic. They love college students, and there is a lot to do. Sports are huge on campus. It is consistently rated by students as having a very strong social atmosphere. Students tend to really enjoy their time there. The academics are strong especially in the science and tech arena. It’s not near a big city, so if that is important to you, it’s a poor choice.

If you are looking for an engineering program that is solid and a bit easier to get into than OSU or VT, while still having a great college atmosphere, I would suggest Mississippi State, Auburn, Oklahoma State, University of Florida, University of Arizona, or the University of Oklahoma

@Hokiesfam‌

What about Christiansburg or Roanoke? I guess there is bus for transportation to these 2 areas and they do match the city criteria (kind of).

Roanoke is 45 minutes away. Unless things have changed recently, you’ll have to have a car or hitch a ride to get there. Christiansburg and Blacksburg are both good sized towns but not big cities. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot to do. It just isn’t a city school like New York University, or Temple

@Hokiesfam‌
That’s fine. I guess I wouldn’t get the chance to go off campus a lot as so many activities within the campus and there would be internship or other programs in breaks.
I would want to experience the city life but I guess its better that I stay focused in studies and feel comfortable (peaceful) with my surroundings (probably).

I guess you have your name as Hokies fan… I want to ask why? Its just the sports or the university.

Blacksburg Transit -service around Blacksburg and Christiansburg
Smartway Bus-service from VT to Roanoke and Roanoke Airport
Megabus-service from Christiansburg to Washington DC
HomeRide-service between school and DC area

I’m an alumni

@sevmom Haha, thanks!

I want to ask you a question. Say, someone you know has planned studying abroad for under-graduation and has two university options to select from.
Now, one university is better ranked than the other. However, that someone has a friend going to the less ranked university.

So, would you consider the company of a friend to an abroad university a bigger plus point than better ranking of university (where he has to go alone)?

@Hokiesfam‌ Awesome! Now I know you would be loving your university… But, are there any negative points you encountered that you can share?

VA Tech Negatives?! Haha! Yes, of course there are. Negatives are a personal thing however, what I didn’t like you might like. Plus, I went a while ago. I’ve been back quite a few times in recent years, but still, I probably can’t answer some of your more particular questions.

In general, if you don’t like cold weather, you won’t like the weather there. It is a large school, so the administration can be a little impersonal. Like all large schools, you’ll have to hunt out the solid professors. They don’t give out many scholarships. They aren’t very loyal to their alumni–but do love to ask us for more money. . .but that’s common for big schools. I haven’t seen all of their new dorms, but some of the older ones are still there and have not been updated. They need to update their gym. OSU’s gym is fantastic!

As far as your question about a friend -I might take that into consideration as one factor but would weigh other things as well. Both nice schools. Good luck with your decision.
