I have to choose between Ohio State University, which has offered me full tuition + $1000 scholarship and Carnegie Mellon, which has offered ~$8000 in aid.

Basically, it costs almost the same to go to OSU for four years as it does to go to CMU for one year. :

Is it worth it?

It depends on your priorities, I suppose. There are lots of things to think about, like academics, social life, campus, city…

I think it’s worth noting that OSU is a fairly large school, with much more students than CMU. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is different for everyone. :P

Reputation…if computer science and engineering (and maybe business) are your thing, CMU is a no brainer in terms of the kinds of opportunities that will be opened post-graduation.

Can you and your family afford CMU immediate costs and longterm payments ?

It sounds like you have some money resources since you did get an award from CMU?

If the answer is no, then OSU is the better option. Be aware of any conditions (minimum GPA standard) with OSU.

Congratulations on your award to Ohio State

Just curious about OSU-I’ve heard it’s next to impossible to get much from them. How did you qualify? We were going to pursue it, but heard we didn’t have much chance. Our valedictorians from last year got almost nothing from OSU.
TIA

Hmmm----

40,000 for 4 years at OSU

160,000 for 4 years at CMU

That’s 120,000----If you have the money—save it and watch it increase.
If you have need loans—don’t even think about it.

CMU is not worth 120,000 extra----

I got full tuition because I’m a National Merit Finalist, actually.

My family’s EFC is ~$45000 so I can afford to go there, but if anything happened to either of my parent’s jobs, we would be in trouble. -__-

Thank you for your inputs!

Well if money isn’t a big issue, then you should really consider CMU for its academics. It also depends on what you’re going to be majoring in too.

Well, CMU’s education quality is needless to say and if you don’t mind the tough courses and high tuition, then CMU is surely the first choice
