OSU vs UMICH

is it worth the $40,000 to attend umich,
or should i just go to osu?

i know tomorrow's the deadline.

hahahha....if you're asking if its worth it...i'd go to OSU...don't take a $160K gamble.

I'm just saying that people who are gonna pay full out-of-state are generally pretty enamoured with Umich..you are clearly on the fence

Unless if your parents are very well off, I would say go for OSU. It isn't even worth paying $160,000 extra to attend Harvard, let alone Michigan. Michigan may open a few more doors, but it is never a guarantee and it is NOT worth $160,000. If your parents are financially well off, go for it. Otherwise, go for OSU. OSU is a fine school (yuck, I can't believe I said that) and it will serve you well.

Alex I would disagree. I just finished my freshman year at Michigan (coming from Indiana), and I believe the experience in Ann Arbor is priceless. If cost is not a major factor, DEFINITELY go to Michigan. Unless it is your number one factor and you have no financial aid, go to Michigan. I have travelled the world, and I would say Ann Arbor is THE most amazing place I have been.

Nirvana, I agree. I too have travelled the World over. I have been to over 40 countries and lived in 7 countries on 3 continents. I completely agree that Ann Arbor is one of the most unique, special and amazing places on Earth. I would say it is my second favorite place on Earth...after Paris.

And the University is incredible. I can only think of 3 or maybe 4 universities I would have picked over Michigan (Harvard and Stanford for sure and maybe MIT and Princeton) and even then, I would probably not have had as good an experience. I cannot imagine a better place to spend one's undergraduate years. I turned down Brown, Cal, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Northwestern and Penn in order to attend Michigan and today, 10 years after graduating, I am positive I made the right decision. Michigan is, in my opinion, THE most complete university, from academics to reputation, from sports to the performing arts, from the campus to the town of Ann Arbor.

But if a person comes from a middle-income background, spending an additional $160,000 is a little too much in my opinion. With that money, one can buy a BMW 760 and pay for a top MBA program! LOL So whereas I agree that the experience Michigan provides is indeed unique, there is a price involved and there comes a time when the price is simply too steep.

Unless you are getting a full ride from Ohio State and zil from Michigan, the difference is more like $20K a year. However, if you have to take out a loan for $80K, I'd say go with Ohio State.

KB54010 is right - people paying out-of-state tuition should know clearly why they want to go to Michigan.

"

i think u would say this about any other top 30 school had u attended taht school. there's no best university, no most complete university. maybe there is, but just for YOU . :)

i have see A LOT of graduates from mit, stanford, princeton and mich who didnt enjoy their undergrad experience as much as u did, Alexandre. u r the lucky guy

also, if people enjoyed UMich soooo much, how come the alumni giving rate is lower than a lot of other school's? NO OFFENSE, i just feel like posting a lot today :)

ThomYorke, the reason why only a small portion of alumns give money to Michigan is because unlike other schools, Michigan has over 500,000 living alumns! IT is impossible to reach more than 30% at any time. However, if you look at donations per alumn, Michigan is among the top, which explains why Michigan's endowment has grown by 1000% over the last 15 years, compared to under 500% at the second most rapidely growing university endowment. Just as Stephen Ross why he gave $100 million to the Michigan Business school...the largest gift ever to a Business program.

You say that the alumns of any of the top 30 schools would say the same? I do not agree with you entirely! Some schools have, on average, disatisfied alumns...and almost no alumni body is as loyal and satisfied as the Michigan alumns.

But Thom, one thing is clear. Michigan is one of THE most complete university experiences in the country. There isn't more than a handful of universities that can match what Michigan has to offer....and none can best Michigan.

With 50% of alums living in Michigan they already give every year through taxes. That's enough for some.

In 201 days you will realize that OSU was the right choice. :)

OSU has beaten Michigan only once in the Big House since the late 1980s. It is not going to happen in November of 2005. Hehe

We shall see, the mighty one Coach Tressel is 3-1 against that school up north and has a .500 record (albiet 1-1) in the big house. It sucks that I have to root for another Wolverine alum now that my Brownies drafted Braylon Edwards, but he goes into the like pile along with Aaron Shea as one of the very, very few U of M alums I root for.

Why as a buckeye fan are you posting on a Michigan message board? Have some class. Oh that's right. ohio state fans have no class. You haven't won a legitimate championship since the 70s under woody "im going to choke a player" hayes. The incompetent ref gift-wrapped the 2002 title, which should have belonged to the Miami Hurricanes. There is NO WAY ohio state will win at the big house next year.

The only reason I posted on this board was because the OSU board sucks and has like 4 posts. Agreed, OSU fans are drunken idiots. Agreed, that school up north is superior academically. Agreed, OSU is a football factory. But the fact I agree on the most is that we beat you buffoons last year and will come up to the small house this year and stomp some wolverine arse. The <insert snobbish="" voice=""> "University of Michigan Law Quadrangle" can't save you now.</insert>

JOEV, Tressel is 3-1 vs Michigan and Carr is 6-4 vs OSU. In either case, the rivalry is now a rivalry (it wasn't from 1980-2000, when Michigan went 14-5-1 vs OSU). The games are closer now. But I do not see Tressel winning in Ann Arbor this fall. If there is one game I will guarantee this year, it is the Michigan vs OSU game.

Shea and Edwards are good people.

Colts drafted Marlin Jackson who will destroy givens, brown, patten or whatever other receivers that trash team from new england led by an overrated d-o-u-c-h-ebag qb has.

<if there="" is="" one="" game="" i="" will="" guarantee="" this="" year,="" it="" the="" michigan="" vs="" osu="" game.=""></if>

scary prediction....OSU is going to be tough this year..

kdos, OSU is going to be awesome next year...they always are. It is not a question of whether or not they will be awesome. But Michigan seldom loses to the same team two years in a row. It happens, but rarely...especially when the second year is an "at home" game.
