Other LAC's like bates (less competitive)

-I applied ED to bates, and I am waiting to see if i will get accepted, I think I have a fairly good shot, it is def. my first choice

-Now, I have to find other schools to apply to as safeties/matches in case I dont get in

-I definitly want a smaller LAC about the size of bates (under 2500 undergrads), preferably not in a city, and somewhere where skiing isnt too far away. Also not really preppy, for instance I didnt like trinity college, I opted for Bates because I liked the laid back atmosphere, seems diverse non judgemental, more economic diversity, less polo wearing stereotypical prep schoolers (not me).

-Any suggestions?

-stats:
comp. public highschool in MA, 4.0 gpa, 1980 SAT I, 690 MathIIC, 650 Literature, 720 US Hist, student council president, other extracuriculars, mostly having to do with student government and leadership, National honor society, in top 10% of class.

I have though about Colorado College (I dont mind the distance) but I am not sure how I feel about their block program.

please reply if you can help

I hope you get into Bates. Sounds like a great school. My son is at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wi and he loves it. He is a "think different" kind of guy. He grew up, his entire life, overseas in Middle East but Hispanic. He had no preconceived notions of place in the U.S. 11% internationals at the school, some east and west coast kids and of course midwesterners. It is totally a friendly place according to him. Academics are spot on. He did IB Diploma. As a freshman, he has one class that is like tutorial with professor and 2 students. It is pretty good for first year. Take a look.

skidmore? bryn mawr if youre female?

Wheaton in Mass?
UVM is another thought. close to skiing and non prepster ish.
did you look at Wesleyen? it may be more of a reach....
middlebury? near skiing and some prep but not serious....

Kenyon
Lafayette
Gettysburg
Union
Franklin and Marshall
Bucknell
Hamilton
Colgate
Denison
St Lawrence
Hobart
Allegheny

Might want to consider Holy Cross. HC actively recruits diversity and location is better than Bates-Lewiston Maine. Mt. Wachusett Ski area 15 minutes away.

Clark, Wheaton, Skidmore, Hobart...?

I don't think Hamilton and Colgate are "less competitive" than Bates.

Hartwick - Oneonta, NY

Gettysburg - Gettysburgh, PA

Hobart - Geneva, NY

Muhlenburg - Allentown, PA

Ursinus - Collegeville, PA

Yeah I actually applied to UVM through a VIP application that they sent me, and I have already been accepted, but the thing is it is a little too big for me (like 9000 undergrads) so it is kind of a last resort. I am a female, but not really interested in an all girls school. I def. dont think I have a chance at a place like middlebury or bowdoin, and wesleyan is a bit of a stretch as well. I have looked at a lot of the upstate new york schools (hamilton, colgate, union, skidmore) and I think I have a shot at some of them, but they are a little too "in the middle of no where". I was actullay looking at bard college and I think I would like it there, but it seems to have a huge drinking problem or so I hear (not that I dont go out, but I dont want people to be drunk 5 nights a week).

Thanks for all the suggestions...they were helpful

also, someone said something about recruiting diversity, I am not a minority of anytype...a white jewish girl from a boston suburb...not too special

Also, look into Lawrence Univ, in Appleton, WI. Really nice not-excessive-party-wise school with a music conservatory (like Oberlin) not too dissimilar from Bates.

Bates is a great school. Good luck.

In the midwest, consider Lawrence or St. Olaf.

Don't know how far away the skiiing is, but Whitman or Lewis & Clark in the northwest might work.

What about Drew in Madison, NJ?

BTW: Lawrence has EA, non-binding.

i applied to bates ED too! i heard Drew is a great school. Also, my sister goes to U. or Rochester and she LOVES it. It's not a LAC but it has small classes and great professors and about a 45% acceptance rate.

i hope we both get in ED that would be sweet :)

ps- which public HS in MA are you from? I went to Acton-Boxborough Regional High School until two years ago when I moved to California.

claire-

I go to Dover sherborn, its pretty small...

skidmore, gburg (but still preppy), sarah lawerence, UVM (a little big), bennington, wheaton, hampshire

I don't see any reason why you wouldn't have an excellent chance of getting into Bates.

You are well above their median-SATS and, given that half their students don't submit SATs, you are probably at their real 75th percentile.

You have a top-10% class rank which puts you in the top third of their enrolled class.

I don't think Bates is a big reach for you. I'd call it a match and that's based on where kids have gone from a similar Mass. high school.

I also wouldn't completely write off Middlebury. It's probably a reach, but not totally beyond the realm of possibility. Their real median SATs (as opposed to the ones they give USNEWS) are 1230 - 1400, so you are above their median test scores.

Skidmore would be a almost a sure bet and it's pretty close to the Vermont ski areas.
