Who is planning on attending a UC school that is not UCB or UCLA even if they are accepted at UCB and UCLA?

My plan has always been to go to Berkeley if I get in as my #1, and I think I have a really good chance of getting in. Now I am wondering if that is the best choice. I’ve been weighing the pro’s and con’s of Berkeley and Davis:

Berkeley:
- More prestigious. Better program

I get to stay in the Bay Area

Davis:
- Cheaper cost of living

Probably easier to keep a high GPA.

Plus, prestige isn’t really that important until grad school anyway, and Davis is only an hour away from S.F so I wouldn’t be that far out of the Bay Area. A high GPA at Davis would still ensure that I get into a great post-grad program.

If you are planning on choosing a different school over UCB and UCLA even if you are accepted to both, why are you choosing to do that?

very very good question! I think that at this point of our lives (those of us that are freshmen/sophomores in college) its extremely hard to see past the prestige factor, so props for doing so yourself!

I have to admit that UC Davis might simply be more fun for you than Berkeley too, I have a friend there as a freshman, and my stepmother went there for law school, and both absolutely love it. Not to mention its closer to Tahoe ;)- another friend of mine is on the skii team up there, and goes skiing three times a week.

Wanting to keep a higher GPA is also a great thing to take into consideration, a big fish from a small pond looks better than a medium fish from a big pond. As long as the two ponds aren’t in completely different leagues, that is.

For me, I think I want to go to UCB or UCLA because the job recruitment for business majors is stronger at both than any of the other UC’s (as far as I know).

I’m at San Diego State now though (obvious, given my name), so I think if i chose to not transfer to UCB or UCLA then I would just stay here rather than choose another UC… cuz if there’s one thing that this school has, it’s fun and sun!! :D

When I first started down this road, it was UCLA or bust. Now that I 100% plan on attending grad or law school, I’m more and more inclined to spend my time somewhere I’d enjoy and somewhere I have existing social contacts, as the prestige factor isn’t as important.

UCSD and UCD for me.
