Otis College of Art & Design

How come no one seems to talk about Otis? Is it not known well nationally as is RISD Parsons etc?

If any of you remember me, my previous choice was between Otis and Parsons. I've decided Otis because at the last minute through an appeal, I received an extra 7500 to attend Otis because of theCal Grant.

I remember you, liek. And I am happy that you have found your school! :)

I think east coast schools just dominate. California has a lot of top schools, but ppl are already so lost in the hype of a RISD or a Harvard that they almost don't pay attention at times.

Just my 2 cents.

how competitive is it to get into otis? i heard their acceptance rate hovers around the 50% mark

PS I think if many fashion prospective student take a look into Otis fashion department, they'd fall in love. I'm in love right now. I just hate how everyone is so name crazy about Parsons, it makes me feel insecure.

It's funny. I just drove past OTIS in LA. Infact, it is near LAX airport. The weather was fantastic. Otis does have a good fashion design program and also has a facit of fashion design that most other schools don't have: costume design. I think you will both enjoy Otis and learn a lot too.

Thank you for remembering me, but yes, I am going to Otis.

I can't wait for foundation to be over so I can start taking fashion classes! But regardless, I'm happy.

The fashion design program is located in Downtown LA inside CalMart. Which is even better for me because I live closer to Downtown LA than I do to the airport. It's very convenient.

What I realize now is that I don't necessarily have to have Parsons on my resume to be successful. I'm not guaranteed anything after I graduate from school, and to pay so much for Parsons, I don't think it's worth it. The money I would have spent on Parsons(which would have been easily 75K+ by the time I would have graduated), I could easily invest in starting my own company or clothing line.

And when I really compare the quality of sketches a fashion design students produces from parsons to the one of otis, otis wins hands down. They are so detailed oriented and they look so freaking great! I wish I still had the link to the portfolio of a student of Otis who won Otis the title of "Best in School" (i think in 2004) from the CFDA Awards(which are the fashion academy awards).

That's the link to the portfolio of the girl who won the title for Otis.

There's always the huge debate over whether or not to go to the expensive art school and be massively in debt.

I'm going to RISD in the fall -- and yes, I will probably be an indentured servant to a bank for many years.

But I know that I am going to a good school with other highly motivated people.

And psssh. If I'm going to go into debt I am DOING IT WITH STYLE!

Is no one impressed by that portfolio I linked. I was.

oh i was aswell... the colour + the unique drawing style of the artist is inspiring. i'd be more impressed if she couldn't do that before she got in the program. nonetheless, otis seems like a highly qualified school.
