OU Freshman Housing

Hello there!

I am planning on attending OU in the fall of 2017. I have been looking into housing and was wondering what the nicest option would be? Which hall is the newest and what were your experiences with it? I am from Texas and do not have any acquaintances that have recently attended OU to get input from.

Thanks!

Headington Hall is the nicest and most expensive, it’s the athletic dorm but you don’t have to be an athlete to live there. They are opening the new “residential colleges” next year but I don’t think they will be taking freshmen.

The Towers (my DD lives in Walker) are all pretty much the same.

Headington Hall is the nicest, but if I were a freshman who didn’t know anyone at OU, I would go with any of the towers.

My daughter is in Couch which is suite style housing and has been happy there. She didn’t know anyone and was paired with a great roommate. She is a national merit scholar and was paired with a fellow scholar.

^^ My freshman D is happy in Couch. She did not know any one but now she has many friends from next and opposite rooms. She told there are many students from Texas. OU assigns a dedicated floor in each tower for national merit scholar.

I lived in Couch in my freshman year and Adams in the summer. I don’t know all the residence halls but I’ve experienced Couch, Adams, and Walker most. All the three dorms are suite style with two bedrooms and a bathroom. So, 4 people share the bathroom. Couch, Adams and Walker are located next to each other.

Couch

  • Quite a lot of international students on the 3rd floor
  • A kitchen on the 3rd floor but only 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floor students can enter (If I remember correctly)
  • Right next to Couch restaurant where students usually eat
  • A study room with computers (pretty big)

Walker

  • A convenience store in the building
  • A computer room

Adams

  • Oldest building
  • I feel the room is a bit smaller than couch but it didn’t matter to me
  • Bad internet connection in the lobby area and a few bedrooms (my room was fine but my friend experienced bad internet connection in her room)
  • Study rooms in the lobby and the highest floor
  • Cane’s at the lobby

David L. Boren Hall

  • It’s a community style, so no bathroom in your room
  • Two people bedroom
  • They have their own library (I’m not sure if it’s library or study room from what I heard. I’m sorry if I got this wrong)

Cate

  • Community style

Headington Hall

  • A lot of athletes
  • Nicest building

I’d recommend living in either Couch or Walker because they have good internet connection and study rooms. The rooms are pretty nice and aren’t old. A lot of freshman will be living there as well.

My D reports that they are remodeling Walker and taking out the computer center and replacing it with a kitchen.

@Adrenaline Interesting you mentioned about internet connection. That explains the puzzle we are having. My D in couch and we noticed it is pretty bad at least in her room. Text takes 10-15 minutes to reach her some times and skpye get disconnected frequently.

@3scoutsmom It is good they are building kitchen.

What I heard from my D and her friends, though they got connected and happy etc, the only thing almost all of them feel bad is related to food (bored and tired of eating the same stuff etc). Hopefully having kitchen, may help them once in a while to try some thing new.

OU is closer to DFW (or most of it) than is UT. Lots of Texans in Norman.

My D is a NMF and just put her deposit in at the beginning of March. Is it too late to get into the NMF floors in Walker?

No (not too late). NMF students will get NMF floor in any one of the towers (not necessarily in Walker). Last year we confirmed to join OU and Dorm request only in April and still my D got the NMF floor.

@GoldenRock Thanks for the feedback! My daughter has definitely chosen OU now and I’m looking forward to being a Sooner dad. Just 4 more kids to go after this one.
