Ouachtia Baptist University

I've been offered a full scholarship to a small baptist school in the middle of Arkadelphia, AR, where both my music minister and pastor went. Both are incredibly intellectual individuals and some other very smart people, including Mike Huckabee, the current governor of Arkansas, went there. In fact, Huckabee's gonna start teaching classes there in 2007. Since my career plans are in ministry, would it be a good idea to go here? Im able to get into Emory by pulling a few strings but 42,000 a year sounds a little pricey to me. Any comments appreciated.

go to EMORY, ru kidding

that school could be the name of cereal company in Africa for al i now

Emory is a great university, widely prestigious (also, i got in lol :) )

There is no choice here, if u told me that u had a scholarship to like BU or something, i would say grab it, but this school could go out of business in a couple of years

How do u recommend paying for all this? So far, only way I've found is to sign up for the Air Force after college. I've also got scholarship offers at Baylor(80,000), Arizona State, OU, A&M, but as I'm planning on ministry, I'm wondering how much does it matter.

Oh...if you're planning on being a minister, then just take the cheapest place you can find.

now what if i'd like to go to Princeton Theological Seminary for grad school. I actually have plans to assist with some ministries out in Glenside and Warrington, then come back home to Texas after seminary.

whoa...you are in exactly the same position i am in....
I got a full-ride to a completely unknown small christian school too, and I am trying to decide whether to accept it (financial reasons) or pay tens of thousands of dollars to go to a better, more recognized school. I am also hoping to get into an Ivy or other strong graduate program....

I know how hard it is to decide. If I were you, though, I would stick to a Christian school since you are planning on going into ministry. If you want a more academica environment, Baylor would probably be better, but the full ride at Ouachtia makes it a major candidate too. I don't know if that helped any. Keep us posted on what you decide!

Good Luck!

Since you have no serious funding from Emory, I would probably look elsewhere. (And I say that even though I went to Emory for a master's.) Is there any way you could swing Baylor with the $80,000 grant? Is other help available? You would have the best of both worlds: a school that is known outside the region, but that also has religious ties.

Camper89 - Congratulations on some excellent choices for college! Now comes the hard part of deciding where to go. As you know, Ouachita Baptist is a fine small university (primarily liberal arts) with a solid reputation in Arkansas and some very accomplished alums. However, attending Ouachita will definitely be different than attending any of the much larger universities you have also been admitted to (small liberal arts college with lots of attention versus the larger universities with less personal attention but a smorgasbord of academic and extracurricular opportunities). The closest in both tone (Christian emphasis) and size to Ouachita would be Baylor (but still a multi-faceted university versus LAC). Definitely visit Ouachita if you have not been there to make an informed decision. Given that you are leaning to the ministry at this early stage, Baylor (and the $20 K scholarship per year) should definitely be on your radar too. Again, visit your final couple choices one more time (overnight in the dorms and attending a couple classes) before you decide However, you can't go wrong with any of the other fine schools you have been admitted to - A&M, University of Oklahoma (a favorite of mine) or Arizona State.

By the way, I lived in Atlanta for several years (loved it) and think a lot of Emory, BUT if you are intending to stay in the Southwest any of the larger schools you have already been admitted to will have a stronger name recognition and alumni network than Emory (and would be a lot cheaper). It's great to have the choices you do! Congrats again!

My grandmother went there and went on to get a masters in education.

I think she liked it, but I don't think she lived in the dorms as she was married and such.

visited ouachita yesterday. wow, it far surpassed my expectations. i got to meet with the assistant to the president, the president, and about every dean in the school. suprised to hear that at one time they had 3 alums at harvard law at the same time, and plenty of kids going on to awesome grad schools. beautiful scenery, right on the ouachita river. incredible cafeteria(all you can eat on the meal plan, brick oven, free soft serve, icees, and delicious food plus a chick fil a(mmmm)/starbucks). i loved the biblical interpretation class i took( they even have the staff members who wrote the common textbook used in most religion classes all across the country).really short drive(4 hours on I-30) ive always loved arkadelphia since its not too far from the city( little rocks only an hour away) but still has a southern small town charm. i still have to visit ou, and maybe baylor again(even though ive gone there all my life since my dad and uncle played football there) but ouachita beat all my other visits.

That sounds really promising. It just underscores the fact that it's so important to have a personal look, especially when it's a school that is not well known outside the immediate region. There are a lot of hidden gems out there.

Please let us know what you decide.

checked out acu(abilene christian university) yesterday, which seems strong as well, and ou recently, visited baylor all my life(my dad and uncle played football there), but theres just something about ouachita, dont know what it is. any other places i should visit?

Id choose Emory only because its an accredited school Ive never heard of Ouachita but then again going into the ministry im not sure about education standards. You should check out Baylor and ACU in texas because those are accredited religious schools as well.

GO TO EMORY AND GET AS MANY SCHOLARSHIPS POSSIBLE

seriously. there is a HUGE difference between going to a top 20 university and some no name place in arkansas.

yet another reiteration....i cannot pay without going into the military. theres not enough scholarship money in the world for me to pay 42,000 a year to go to emory when i can go to a great school for free

well did you apply for financial aid?

my father makes over 300,000 a year. no financial aid out there.

the point needs to be made that there are great schools outside the top 20 rankings. both acu and ouachita are fully accredited, they even have aacsb certs. their graduates are going to ivy league and other top grad schools, plus they have a great christian climate. given my calling to ministry, thats something i need.

explain to me how your family cannot afford $40,000 when your father makes over $300,000.

easy...im only letting em pay so much. i kinda like to let em off this once since theyve provided so much for me in my life, in times of poverty and prosperity. it would be so satisfying to give them the satisfaction of not having to pay for my education. i dont wanna live in the shadow of my fathers finances my whole life. relying on mommy and daddy for everything is not a lifestyle one should live. emorys out for me, those of yall who cant understand that u can get a good education at a place uve never heard of, that there are schools u dont know about that can provide the right education for someone like me, might wanna rethink some things
