Our college costs rising 5%. How about yours?

Just got the letter from my son's college president. Tuition, room, and board are going up 5 percent for 2011-2012, just as they have for each of the last three years.

Have you gotten the word yet on what is happening with costs next year at your kid's college?

Swarthmore announced a 3.4% increase. I would expect most private schools to be under 5% increases again this year.

Boston University announced a 3.85 increase for next year. I am happy it was not higher since I budgeted for a 4% increase.

This probably explains one reason it’s going up in the first place. How much do you think that cost?

Let’s see … a 0% increase for D#1, a 100% DECREASE for D#2 (yeah!), and dunno yet for D#3. (Graduation is a good thing.)

PA state schools usually don’t find out until August - makes budgeting and loan applications a lot of fun.

I put 3 through privates. We always figured a 5% increase each year and we were almost always right on.

5% increase in tuition; 10% increase in room and board.

" 5% increase in tuition; 10% increase in room and board. "

Ouch.

NYU says 3.8% but FA is supposed to increase by a like amount.

^^^ Same at Harvard.

At W&M: 5.5 percent overall increase for in-state students; 5.7 percent for OOS students.

Hard to say what the increase will be.
Could be 16%

DD’s college tuition is increasing 3.9% but from 2009-2010 it has gone up by 7.8%. Also look at the rising trend with larger jump from 2011 to 2012.

2012 40,460 3.90%
2011 38,940 3.81%
2010 37,510 3.79%

DD’s Room and board might go down coming year.

^Very much appreciated.

My kids’ costs are rising at 3-5% each year also – room & board and tuition.

Tuition at all our (NC) state schools will rise again this year. S2 moved off campus after freshman year so r&b is not a concern. Rent on his dumpy house will not go up! Thank goodness he’s is a rising senior.

Tuition and fees going up 170% next year.

(The state of GA stopped funding the “fees” part of tuition and fees so students will pay the full $2100 in fees next year. Still a bargain, though: In absolute terms, tuition+fees is going from $800 to $2100)

Really a very good gesture on part of Princeton to peg tuition increases to less than 1%. I think all institutes need to learn from it.

Wow! way to go Princeton.

U.Va. Board Approves 2011-12 Tuition; Holds Increases to Single Digits for Eighth Consecutive Year

UVA tuition up 8.9% for 2011-2012, In addition to tuition increases, the average increase in UVa meal plan rates will be 3.7 percent and in housing 4.5 percent over last year.
