We have visited a number of schools which my daughter liked for certain reasons and not. I keep hearing about how you know when you visit, something will spark. After visiting Bates, Bard, Colby, Skidmore, St. Lawrence, Ithaca, Wesleyan, Brandeis, Emerson, Muhlenberg, and St. Lawrence, something struck her about Connecticut and I don’t even know what it was. She loved the setting, the campus setup, the student vibe (little that she got) the admissions interview and her chat with the theatre chair. I would love to hear what anyone else has to say yay or nay about their experiences with the school.
and I’m horribly mortified by my error in my title, especially given the fact that I am an editor by trade 8-|
Two years in, I can say that BY FAR the best part of our daughter’s experience has been her ability to develop meaningful relationships with some of her professors. She is a Government (Conn’s version of political science) and French double major, and there are at least 3 and maybe 4 professors with whom she has had multiple classes, who know her very well, and who she relies on for guidance and advice. Conversely, BY FAR the worst experience has been the absurd political correctness and cowardice of much of the Conn administration, at least some of whom appear to be determined to make Conn as cartoonishly left-wing as Oberlin. Just Google a little in terms of what went on last year with Prof. Pessin and the day campus was closed because of a random bit of graffiti in a bathroom stall. Laughable stuff. The good news on that front is that the vast majority of Conn students do not reflect the biases of the administration, and seem to be well within the range of normal, healthy, well-adjusted kids.
That’s my 2 cents.
My D thought it was really preppy when she visited, which she didn’t care for. Since you say your D didn’t get a chance to experience much of the student vibe, she may want to visit again before committing (accepted student visit if she gets us RD, or before ED applications if she is thinking of ED).
Igitur, as a Conn alum I know exactly what your daughter experienced. There is something about Conn that spoke to me when I first visited the campus and looked out over Harkness Green. It was a gut feeling that I didn’t get on any other campus. That was over 20 years ago and I can tell you that I still get that same feeling when I drive onto the campus today. Conn is a special place with special people and my guess is that if your daughter experienced that feeling that she would be very happy there.
