If the application is complete today, how long until they make decisions on out of state applicants? Do we have to wait until March? Also, we are hoping for the tuition waiver and I read somewhere that even getting a $1,000 scholarship can qualify an oos student for the tuition waiver. Anyone know the easiest way to get that $1,000 scholarship? Son is hoping to be accepted to Engineering. (33 ACT, top 10%)

Engineering is one of the colleges at UT that is generous with scholarships, so your son may be in luck, and if his math score is good (33 comp is certainly good), he’s likely to get in engineering and perhaps get $1000. Good luck!

Unfortunately, it may be a bit before you hear though, because UT legally has to get through all the instate top 10ers before they can offer an oos kid a spot - unless they are a total no brainer admit.

In you son’s case - engineering is one of the more competitive majors, and within engineering there are varying degrees of competitivenes (ie biomedical - toughest, petroleum - easier), and while you say top 10%, which is he closer to, top 1% or top 10%, that will make a difference, and if his math score on the ACT is 36, that will make a difference.

I do believe your son will more than likely gain admission, it depends on ^^ as to when he’ll find out.

Wheatmom, I was under the same impression as you about getting the tuition waiver, but my dad (a UT engineering prof) has told me they’ve REALLY tightened up the number of waivers they’re giving out. Supposedly, it’s just a few for the entire school of engineering! I was disappointed to hear that.

Too bad to hear that it may be awhile before we get a decision, because UT has now received everything they need from DS. Sigh.

He put biomedical engineering as his first choice, knowing it’s a real long shot, and biology as his second. He got a 2220 on the SAT and is in the top 10%.
