Out-Of-State Aid?

Can anyone help me find a list of schools that will waive out of state tuition based on merit? I know Florida State does based on academics and possibly extra-curricular activities. Most schools in my state are either impossible for me to get into, or so easy that anyone can get into. If anyone has any info on some decent schools it would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time!

DD got great merit from University of Nebraska - Lincoln. It was at or below their instate rates

UofSC plus strong honors college if you qualify. Will stack award for NMF.

Kansas, Kansas State, Auburn, Mississippi State, Iowa State all do. Kansas State most people can get in to but it is actually an excellent school with strong programs. Look at the programs not just how easy it is to get into. States like Kansas want their state schools to give most students a chance so encourage high admittance. Honors colleges are great and classes are still very challenging. They don’t “dumb them down” due to lower selectivity by any means.

There aren’t many full tuition merit scholarships…depending on your stats look at Miami Ohio, U Alabama and UAH.

Montana State University will grand in-state tuition rates to OOS students based on their test scores.

Look up the scholarships for each state school that interests you. A lot of them, too many to easily list, have OOS awards that bring down the costs to in state level, but the usually are not automatic.

What schools interest you? The public schools that are trying to attract OOS with large merit tend to be the ones with less name recognition

Which of the Carolinas are you from?

NC is full of terrific public universities.

SC has USC, and College of Charleston, both fine colleges.

If your stats are not strong enough to get accepted to your better state universities, maybe they aren’t strong enough for merit consideration at an OOS public.

Here are your stats. My opinion…to get merit that will give you instate tuition, you need to raise that ACT score quite a bit…like into the 32 or above range. Your GPA is fine.

My DS who graduated from ASU in '18, received a scholarship that essentially brought tuition to in state levels. He had strong academics and scores, but not NM commended or higher. So, not exactly a waiver, but the end result was the same.

@usma87 was your son’s ACT score 27?

3.8 HS GPA / 27 ACT looking for scholarships that reduce tuition to in-state levels or better…

Don’t throw the baby out with bathwater when trying to get OOS, if your in state options are better than OOS schools than your stats can garner merit from. What is your actual defined budget? Which instate schools would you be admitted to? You won’t get merit money from desirable OOS schools. Even high stats kids struggle with that.

I’m from NC. NC State has been my first choice for a while, but I’m not too confident about my chances. @thumper1 . Thanks for your help everyone!

To answer your question, the following info should have been shared…

You probably need to get a higher ACT score to get an OOS waiver or enough merit for instate rates at many of the better known schools.

Are you going to retest?

@thumper1 - It was in that ballpark - I don’t remember for sure, that was 5 or 6 years ago. He had an unweighted GPA in the 3.8-3.9 range.

At UT Dallas, if you receive any level of AES scholarships, you would qualify for in state tuition. I do think you would need to raise your ACT score to 30ish to be considered.

@99collegemom University of Colorado at Boulder is really stingy with merit aid–OOS and in-state too. They have their info posted online for the general merit scholarahips for sure, and I think the engineering school has their merit scholarships posted too.

Be careful reading though–you’ll see a number like $20,000 and think “we’ll, that’s not bad” but then if you read carefully it is $20,000 over 4 years, so $5,000 per year

New Mexico State University has excellent OOS discounts. While part of the WUE, AZ and CO students do even better and automatically receive instate tuition. Students in all states who have a weighted 3.5 GPA & 23+ ACT or 1140+ SAT receive instate tuition. Merit scholarships can be stacked on to the tuition discount.
