Out of state and income is high. Any chance for WUE?

S has
GPA 3.2
ACT 26
In private catholic boys high school in CA.
2 AP's this sr yr (physics, comparative politics)
Good EC's, V letter two sports (f-ball injury took him to tennis), captain, etc, yearbook/photography
Has ADHD (diagnosed 2nd half of jr yr)
Wants bus major
Think we make too much to qualify for any aide ($300k+), (notes: one Daughter at Cal 3rd year - antithesis of sons academic path)

So questions:
- does not applying for fin aide help chances of admissions significantly in any way? (Is it possible for a 3.2 student to receive any?)
- should he disclose ADHD? (Will they skip him and rather admit a non school fund/effort sucking student?)
- his wish list of schools:
USF, colorado state, U Colo Boulder, Oregon state, Univ of Denver, Michigan state, Seattle Univ, WA State Pullman,

I don’t think any of the schools are Need aware for admissions, so full pay is not an issue, though you can check at that privates listed. I would leave out the ADHD dx. The privates also favor males which is a tip in his favor. I think he has a nice spread of schools but needs one true safety that will definitely take him.

I think the only schools which fall under WUE on your list are Colorado State and WSU. They do recommend students apply early since some schools limit the number of WUE discounts. <a href=“Save On College Tuition | Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)”>http://www.wiche.edu/wue</a> Are any CSUs on the list since you are from CA?

The schools you listed are not all WUE schools, and the ones that are are very competitive for WUE scholarships.

I get it re WUE. I don’t think he’s a strong enough candidate, but mostly wondering if applying as WUE app would hurt him in any way.

Re California schools, no state schools that would accept him are schools he can see himself going. CSU s are really competitive now. Need a minimum 3.5, and some you need 3.8+

Does applying as full pay make him any more attractive?

Not if the school claims to be need-blind in admissions and actually operates that way.

Has your S looked at Boise State? Similar to some schools on your list, and he may qualify for WUE. (They require 3.2 GPA and 21 ACT.

I’ll have him take a look at Boise. Thx

A 3.0 GPA (calculated by the CSU method from 10th-11th grade course grades and up to 8 bonus points for semesters of AP or honors courses) meets minimum CSU eligibility standards for California residents with any (or no) SAT or ACT score.

However, this means admission only to non-impacted majors at non-impacted campuses. This means (for business major), Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, Monterey Bay, and Stanislaus. However, some other campuses are low impaction, so his stats may gain admission to those other campuses.

Also, many campuses admit applicants at baseline eligibility if they live in the local service area, although a few of the more impacted campuses (e.g. San Luis Obispo, San Diego, San Jose) have higher standards even for local applicants.

Note: among non-impacted or less-impacted CSU campuses, Monterey Bay, Humboldt, and Sonoma are mainly residential.

I can’t speak to those exact WUE schools, but having looked into WUE quite a bit, I know the way it operates varies from school to school, but I think in general if a student doesn’t qualify for WUE it doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t get accepted, they may be accepted at standard out of state rate.

Many WUE schools apply the discount automatically if a student meets their qualifications, but some (not too many I don’t think) require a separate or supplemental WUE application. Also some schools limit the number of slots so early applications have an advantage.

Anyone interested in WUE should definitely check out the WICHE site and also the college/university’s own website. It’s often quite a search finding the details. Finally, if WUE is a dealbreaker, one should personally talk to the school to confirm all the requirements.

In general WUE represents 150% of in-state tuition, but the devil is in the details–such as fees that are rolled in with tuition on price charts. Some schools, with a certain level of SAT/GPA, let oos students attend at in-state rate. At the other end of the spectrum, Evergreen State College offers a certain dollar amount off oos tuition to a limited number of students and it does not carry into any study abroad.

Perhaps Northern Arizona U in Flagstaff? Cal State San Marcos (North County San Diego)? Southern Oregon U.?

What is your budget? How much will you spend each year?

Yes…you make way too much to qualify for any aid…even at Harvard or Stanford which give the best aid. Your EFC is over $100k.

What is your son’s career goals? What is his major?

His list of schools seem odd…why is he choosing THOSE schools? What does he like about them?

It is a curious list. I don’t really see someone deciding between Seattle U and WSU.
I do know several people with ADHD, who went on to University of Puget Sound. I would also look at University of Portland and Pacific Universiry.

I know that Alabama would accept this student if he applies within the next couple of months. The app is fast and ez…no LORs, no essays.

WSU is involved in the SALT program, specifically for ADHD students. Large, well funded department, for students with disabilities. Profs are dialed in with extended test times, alternate test areas, etc. also, they have entrepreneurship as a major, which appealed to S.

Seattle U has an entrepreneur minor. It’s a Jesuit school, yes, much smaller yuan most others on his list. But has D1 athletics. Small class sizes looked appealing. I’ll have him look at the other oregon schools. Thx.

He likes being around energy. We live in a suburb of LA with 500,000 diverse population (long beach). Bu frankly, he loves smaller town charm too (ft Collins appealed to him) he gets along well with all types of people, loves athletics, needs to be exposed to lots of ideas, community service options, etc. He is pulled to business majors, especially entrepreneurship, but wants to consider going in as undeclared to “expose himself to many ideas” before having to decide. He figures he might get turned on by something, I.e. He discovered physics in jr year and now is taking ap physics and it’s his best subject in regards to performance and interest.

I think we’re realizing reduced tuition is a pipe dream. D at Cal recvd only one private scholarship ($5k) and she had 4.5, GPA, 11 AP’s, almost perfect SATs, HOBY, etc.

Thank you to all for input. Keep me coming. So helpful to clarify.

Is your son on medication since his Dx? If so, do you see a difference?

Does he have any Executive Function issues? Time management issues?

What about U. of Arizona’s SALT program? (Not WUE!)

Where our son ended up:

Thanks for the update - it’s always good to see how these things work themselves out!
