Out of state chances for business?

Maryland is an awesome school with a great marketing program, I would love to go, but can I make the cut? sound off (please)!

I am a junior, I took the SAT once, no studying, taking it again next week with a prep course (hopefully a large improvement) but my first score was a 1930

good public school in Upstate NY, top 20%, but school doesn't rank.

3.5 GPA UW with the hardest course load, numerous electives, I will graduate all honors with at least 5 APs and a lot of college credits.

Extra Curriculars:

4 years (2 JV 2 Varsity) XC, 4 years varsity tennis, 2 years indoor track
MUN club
Class Government, VP of class sophomore year and a lot of involvement with prom planning etc.
Femtastic gender equality club, involved in a lot of advocacy movements
business experience working for my dad's company (too much to write about here, good stuff though)
Entrepreneurial ventures (again, a lot of details)
Volunteer work with adaptive ski program, I help developmentally disabled kids ski
Camp Counselor all summer (following being a camper for 7 years)
7 week leadership summit last summer in which I helped developmentally disabled adults play sports and other activities.
Nominated for Boys State, will most likely be attending
As many NBA championship rings as Lebron!

Recs will be good i'm sure, and I will write a good essay.

I would apply as a marketing major with a minor in Government

Any responses would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I hate chance threads, but I can tell you that, for this year, these stats were not enough for Smith; know a number of kids who were offered arts and sci who applied to Smith…

some with higher stats than yours…

what if my SAT became a 2050/2100?

OP,
I was accepted fall of 2012 to smith. I had a slightly lower SAT to you and a higher uw gpa 3.85 w 4.2and I’m pretty sure the only reason I got into smith was because I had a couple of great internships with prominent businesses in the Maryland area. Make sure if you apply to smith you either take classes related to business and excel in them or have ecs related to business (besides your pops company). Or else, what motivation are you showing to want to be a business student?

It’s kind of a toss up not gonna lie. I’m OOS and got accepted into Smith with a 3.49 at the time and a 33 ACT with a 34 on math, 36 science, 32 English, and 30 reading. No business classes until senior year and no business related ECs until senior year and I never made UMD aware of the ECs. Im from an extremely competitive school in Illinois so I assume my location had a little bit to do with it. I had lots of leadership roles, ECs, and strong recs and spoke in my essays about my plans as a business leader in my future, but clearly there’s no magic formula that makes you a Smith candidate. Best of luck.

Get your GPA up next year and get a better SAT score and I think you have a very good chance. A 1350 plus on SAT in CR + M should do it. NY sends many kids to UMD so it will always be a challenge.

In addition, look closely at the costs. Your stats probably won’t put you in the range for the top merit scholarships, and the remaining cost for OOS students will make it pricey for you. Even if you qualify for need-based aid, UMD does not meet all need, especially for OOS students. Just making sure you are being realistic in your expectations. Good luck to you!

Thank you, Money isn’t really an issue, but it’s still a large consideration for me.

I was admitted to Smith for the fall 2012 semester with a GPA of about 3.4 and SAT of 1400/1600. Id say you have really good chances, the difficulty of getting into Smith is overrated in my opinion. That being said, I attended their open house on Friday and realized that its actually a really great and prestigious program and definitely worth it. Good luck!
