How easy is it to get in out of state? and do they accept a good amount of out of state people? is it harder or easier to get in if only a few (qualified, from what ive read about their requirements) people from my area applied?
The acceptance rate for OOS students is about the same as in-state.
About 10% to 12% of undergrads are domestic OOS (another 5% or so are international students). UF would like to increase the OOS %.
However, UF can be expensive for OOS students, as it doesn’t offer much in they way of OOS merit based scholarships.
My son is a freshman from Maryland. Although it’s more expensive oos, we found it to be the very best value in terms of education. $40k is better than a lot of oos schools. And don’t count on any merit. It’s pretty much non existent.
The acceptance rate varies from state to state, if you look at the admissions annual report. In some states, the admission rate is higher than the overall in-state rate. What catches people’s attention is what appears to be a low percentage of out-of-state kids who enroll. The yield for out of state is worse than in-state, which makes sense because it is more expensive for out of state kids to attend.
The statement that it is “harder to get in if you are out of state” is not true, in my opinion. It appears to be true because the yield is lower.
The competition for UF is so significant because the top 20% of every senior class in Florida is applying to UF as either their dream school or their safety if they are aiming higher. Every smart kid in Florida applies to UF, even if they have no intention of attending.
