Out of State: Financial Aid

Hey all,

So its come down to either UCF or University of Arizona, both state schools. They each cost about 30,000 a year when all is said and done.

I've applied for financial aid and have not heard back yet. I should be receiving about $4500 total automatically from the government based on my FAFSA and such.

Now though, my financial advisor told me that its unlikely I will be receiving any more, or substantial, money from the schools Financial Aid departments since I am out of state. I am from New York City.

Is this so? Are state schools weak in supplying out of state students with money? My FAFSA EFC is EXTREMELY low (Im talking 3 digits).

Any insight would be great.

Yes, state schools tend not to give much if any financial aid to out of staters no matter how low income they are. Since state schools are supported and run by the states that they are in, they feel obligated to use their limited financial aid funds for in-state residents. The exceptions might be for some stellar applicants whose stats are far above their norm.

Well then, United States Military, here I come.

Did you apply to any private colleges? They are typically more generous with financial aid.

You're in New York, why not try a SUNY or a CUNY?

What about community college?

There are other options than the military.

State schools gave me more money than private schools such as Northeastern or Syracuse. I got between 7,500 to 18,900 for some state schools.

Ohio, I got rejected from the privates that I actually wanted to attend, and wait listed at BU.

I can simply not stay in this state any more. I need to move on. Its an absolute must at this point for me.

We'll see what happens.

"I can simply not stay in this state any more."

why??? what is so horrible? in 4 years you can go any where you like.

UofA does give tuition discounts to kids from OOS, but you need to apply early, since its a limited budget. Sorry.
