Out of State: Multiple Acceptances from a High School?

I've been told by a friend (who has an extended family member on the board of trustees) that UVA doesn't accept more than one student per high school (if the high school is out-of-state). One kid at my high school (one of the top public schools in NC) got in EA.

Does this kill my chances RD? In years past, I don't remember many students getting into UVA, but there were always one or two.

Also, my high school is well-known to admissions officers; after a tour, I spoke with an admissions officer about my background, and she immediately asked if I was from my high school when I mentioned I was from NC. I'm sure they get lots of applications from here, but there (historically) aren't too many acceptances that I know of.

If anyone has any experience or insight, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

At least four acceptances from our high school in Md so far this year. We will probably end up with 7 to 12 admits out of a class of 400 and 40 applicants. Standards are quite high for OOS non-athletes who are not legacy, but there is not a quota. At our high school UVA is easier to get into than any of the top 15 private Universities, but harder to get into than Michighan. UVA definitey has an admissions approach for OOS that is similar to a top private University, picking and choosing among top students. Michighan, in contrast, accepts virtually every top applicant, and wants to pick up all of the talented kids that fall through the random cracks in the arbitrary admissions process.

In 2010, 3 students from my daughter’s southern private prep of 86 graduates were accepted; 5 applied. One, my D, chose to attend and is quite happy.

Ahp1994 and jc40: Thank you so much for your replies!

It just goes to show that you should go to the source to verify information. This is why there’s a dean on call every day to answer questions. :)

LOL. No way is that true.

There’s a certain OOS SE prep school with (I believe) 9 students in UVA’s Class of 2013.

Prep school schmep school. Our local public high school in Anne Arundel County, Maryland had 7 students accepted to UVA last year and 6 in 2009.

Was just quoting the # I knew.

I believe from my high school there were around 40+ applicants that applied to UVa but only around 5 people got accepted EA.

At my high school, which is in Miami, FL., two students got in last year… with about 120 students in the senior class. I’d estimate that maximum ten applied. However, it might be important to note that my high school is number 1 in our county, 2 in florida, and in the top 60 i believe for the U.S.

Historically, from my high school, about 6-8 students apply every year to UVA. Every year, two or three are accepted. Also, I go to a public high school with over 700 kids in each class.
