Out of State scholarship information

ah gotcha, sorry for the misunderstanding! Since you posted your question under this thread I thought you were asking if you had a shot in terms of recruiting scholarships.

My daughter (o.o.s.) applied in mid-October and received her acceptance letter today (12/5/12). Her GPA is 3.9UW/4.75W, with class rank right around the top 5%. She got a 32 on the ACT and 1480/2200 on the SAT. She was awarded the $15,000/year out-of-state academic scholarship (but no mention of the possible companion o.o.s. tuition scholarship that can pay part or all of the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition).

I think they are phasing out the out of state tuition waiver and just giving people “academic scholarships” instead like pickle57. Probably similar in $$$ if you get $15-20,000

My DS is OOS. My son was been accepted to Clemson today he has a 34 ACT. He has a Unweighted 0f 3.9.(7 AP classes). He got $10,000 no mention of out of state wavier either. $10,000 is great but he was really hoping for the waiver…

Curious to know, for people who have been accepted this year, can you share when you applied?

I was offered provisional acceptance and applied 11/17. I’m eager to hear back but I’m guessing early January since it was kind of late?

I’ve just been accepted to General Engineering. I have a 34 ACT and a 4.0UW/4.6W GPA. I’m OOS, from California, and received a $15,000/yr scholarship (an “out-of-state academic scholarship” - I don’t know if this is their new way of saying OOS tuition waiver?). I applied early at the end of August.

There is no longer a waiver, that 15k brings it within I believe 2k or so of their in state.

Congrats!

I received this response today to an email I sent to Student Financial Aid at Clemson: “The $15,000 scholarship is the highest scholarship we offer out-of-state students. The $15,000 is for the year at Clemson University. (Fall and Spring) It will be split between the two semesters. We also offer a Non-Resident grant for out-of-state students. You must fill out the FAFSA before March 1st, have financial need, and have a 1250 on the SAT (28 ACT). This grant is for $2500 per year.”

So OOS won’t have a chance to get more then 15k?

Can’t edit my post.

Is that the only scholarship they will offer OOS students who probably don’t qualify for financial aid? I also applied to calhoun so national scholar is a possibility, but…

It appears so

I’m not sure how anyone else’s acceptance read but my son’s said that his was a guaranteed scholarship (not OOS) and that he would be in the scholarship pool in the spring when scholarships are awarded.

I believe there is an instate scholarship for a few thousand similar to how the OOS are awarded.

As for that additional part, I believe that the application for clemson is entered, and you are entered in a huge list of scholarships which might apply. Then, whoever picks the scholarship does so, and those are sent out. However, I don’t believe its through the school, and I don’t believe the rate for receiving additional scholarships is above 20%. I could have that last sentence wrong but I think I’ve seen both of those facts somewhere.

EDIT: After looking, (here’s the clemson site for those interested- <a href=“Types of Aid - Student Financial Aid | Clemson University”>Types of Aid - Student Financial Aid | Clemson University)

The scholarships based off the application are from the school. There are also many private ones as well which they have a list of. That page is very informative, I recommend looking at it if you haven’t already.

Son recently graduated and I’ll have more on the way, but while at Clemson he received numerous scholarships/grants beyond the OOS tuition waiver (which wasn’t that far off from the current $15K scholarship.) These scholarships mostly came from school donors; some were consistent each semester and others were added over the four years (average was about $8K so just about everything was covered.) There are opportunities for money within your major, honors college, various student organizations, etc. Many were just offered, others he applied for, i.e. Chapman Leaders Scholarship Program. The money is out there if you want to work for it. We found Clemson to be incredibly generous, but I’m sure given the current economy, the money may be a bit tighter considering they are a state school.

Question for you all- the academic recruiting scholarship for OOS people- does it take your final rank?

I sent them my transcript of my Junior year. My guidance counselor said that she thought they based it on the second semester of the senior year. I personally would have though it was the final transcript of the senior year.

So which do they base it off of?

Also, since they are mailing out acceptance letters now with the scholarship in it, if I get one, and they base it on the last semester, would they revoke the scholarship?

Since “Priority” applicants only have the Junior year results, the senior year grades don’t matter at all for admission & merit schol decisions.

Note I said “decisions”: obviously, they do matter at the end, can’t have a big drop, etc. All schools want to get the final HS transcript for this reason (and to have a complete record). Exactly what they’d consider bad enough for revocation of award and/or admission you’d have to ask them. Better to just keep the level up, of course!

tigerin13, it really depends on what your school has sent to Clemson’s admissions office prior to their decision - I doubt that they would take back a scholarship once they have offered it to you unless like exstudent said your final grades are really really bad (say a few D’s or F’s).

Alright, that’s kind of what I was wondering.

I will of course be working hard, but there is one class I had to take which is a 4.0 and another which I opted to because I couldn’t fill my schedule otherwise, so I will drop some. Hopefully I shouldn’t have a problem dropping too far, but who knows…

Does anyone know if Clemson superscores the cr/m scores in determining OOS scholarships?
Thanks

Pretty sure they do.
