2015 OOS Acceptance & Scholarship Questions.

My daughter was recently admitted to Clemson and her admission letter indicated that she was to receive (at this time) the yearly OOS scholarship of $14,000, but that that amount could change at a later date as a further enticement to attract top students.

Can someone here give me the process for how and when Clemson makes the decisions regarding the final scholarship awards?

She plans on filling out the Calhoun Honors Application by the Dec. 1 deadline, but I'm not sure if there are other vehicles that Clemson uses to sweeten the offer beyond the initial offer provided.

She's a NMSF in the top 1% of her class with ACT 35 and SAT 1550 (CR+M). She's been accepted for Political Science / Public Policy.

Any information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. She's already been accepted to Alabama and Tulane with nice offers as well, so understanding how this may all come together over the next couple months should greatly assist her (and us) in making her final decision. Obviously, some of her schools she will not hear back from until late March or April 1st ... which is an entirely different issue. :-)

dad2ild–every year is different, based upon available scholarship money. i’ll just tell you what happened to our son, whose stats were very similar to your daughter’s.

clemson gave an additional scholarship than the OOS waiver. however, then they equalized it, so that the total $ scholarship was still the same. i had heard of others who claimed a similar experience.

he was accepted early at uga and auburn, in addition to clemson. the only school that impressed us with both the scholarship AND the way he and we were treated, for month after month, was auburn. we were so impressed with auburn time and time again.

happy to say son is at auburn, with full tuition scholarship, mac computer given to him, travel stipend of $4K, and departmental scholarships. he’s a very bright, accomplished, well-rounded kid who had many choices. in the end, it comes down to where they’re happy. if they’ve been doing great academically, they’ll continue to do so. they’ll also have unique opportunities presented to them that some students at “higher ranked” schools know nothing about. (sorry, son has a couple of uga blow-hard acquaintances/friends who spew misinformation ad nauseum, but we stay classy.)

my niece went to gcsu in georgia, majored in biology. certainly, not the place you’d think for that. long story short, she excelled, made some fantastic connections which allowed her amazing fully funded opportunities. she’s now at vanderbilt earning her PhD…all expenses paid. it’s where they’re happy and the rest will follow. i wish your daughter the very best of luck and hope she finds great happiness in her college choice! :)

FB … thanks for the reply! There must be something in the water in AL. We visited Tuscaloosa last week and had an AMAZING visit, so she’s pretty happy with them right now, and their NMF package sounds identical to what your D received at Auburn, which frankly is pretty hard to pass up. So, D will be submitting the Calhoun Honors App for Clemson, because my understanding is that if awarded, the package would be similar. Like you said, it will all come down to “fit and feel” but understanding what may be envisioned on the financial side helps too. Thanks again.

dad2ild, you may want daughter to apply to auburn, too. our son was admitted to clemson honor’s program (auto-admitted to uga honor’s program etc… and in auburn honors), but that didn’t seem to matter, concerning scholarships. another area where our son has seemed destined to find, whether it is or is not of importance to you, is auburn umc college ministry. our son, during high school, has been super involved in worship band, international mission trips and leadership positions.

Don’t have anything to add as I didn’t get any scholarship money but I do know that Clemson just jump started a capital campaign and one of their priorities is more scholarship money so hopefully in the years to come Clemson will be more competitive when it comes to recruiting top students!

Son (Honors junior, OOS) receives an additional $8K in Clemson scholarship funds beyond the OOS tuition waiver, so it is possible to get more assistance. Check out the Clemson scholarship link (below) and you’ll find a multitude of scholarships available to students depending on academic focus, GPA, year in school, etc. There are also opportunities to apply for programs that offer funds, e.g. Thomas F. Chapman Leadership Scholars and Gilman Study Abroad Scholars. These types of programs do require ‘extra’ work and participation, but are worthwhile, as well as provide a source of monies if needed. Clemson has exceeded our expectations, both academically and financially!

DS got the big Tiger Town envelope today! He’s admitted for pre-business and received the OOS tuition waver.

When did DS apply? Son applied in October and has not heard anything. Great ACT score 35 but grades are only 3.65 unweighted. Clemson first choice but without the OOS… we will have to see

Is your son in the top 10% of his high school class? If not, it’s going to be hard getting the out of state waiver with that GPA.

how did all of you hear so early? i live in nj and have not heard anything. i applied in the middle of october. could it just be where i live? i was not expecting anything back until feb 15 anyways…i also applied to the calhoun honors program in oct too…

most people who are hearing back now are receiving significant scholarships on the most part and are probably the top applicants. Scholarship money is still possible but the big ones (like the out of state tuition waiver) are mostly being handed out before the february 15th notification date according to people’s past experience

My son was offered conditional acceptance on basis of SAT scores sent in the spring. (M 800 V 620). His grades are okay–3.96 weighted, but he’s taken the most challenging courses his parochial high school offers. Not the top 10% but a captain on the soccer team and pretty solid overall. If he could play soccer at Clemson (attended the camp and has his doubts that he’d make the grade) he’d be a happy camper. We all loved Clemson.

Oh yeah I forgot, another way to get accepted early is via conditional acceptance. If you send Clemson your SAT scores in the spring of junior year and your SAT and grades are good enough, they may offer you that.

Hope your son makes the soccer team! The team is improving and the new coach that we got last year seems to be serious about taking the team to the top

oh thanks. i’m not asking about the scholarships though, i just meant getting in! atleast 3 kids from my school have applied and no one has heard back yet. must be a nj thing :stuck_out_tongue: hahaa my counselor said wait til feb

haha yeah I know, all I’m saying is that the normal date to hear back from Clemson is around Feburary 15th. Only students who get big scholarships or got conditional acceptances hear back before that.

Most people will hear back from Clemson in mid-February.

So would you say if you have not heard back before February there probably will not be any type of scholarship offered to OOS applicants?
thx

^not necessarily, just not a major scholarship like the out of state tuition waiver

I read somewhere that Clemson awards OOS tuition waiver scholarships until funds are exhausted, and I was worried because her transcripts were delayed and just arrived at Clemson last week. She just received an acceptance letter w/OOS tuition waiver today. Thought some of you who are waiting would be relieved to hear that funds are still available.

Congrats to your daughter plms!
Ok, if they give out oos waivers until funds are exhausted does that mean there is possible hope for kids who didn’t quite make the requirements - if money happens to be left? What if a lot of kids decline the oos waiver, does Clemson give that money to other students at a later date when they find out it’s been declined? I’m sure they “overbook” to some degree, but I wonder if they ever give left over waiver money to the next kids in line. Anybody know?

well priority consideration is given to students who applied by December 1st and had everything in by December 31st so if you applied after those dates, your chances probably aren’t that great.
