UF is a match. :-bd

UF will LOVE her EC’s. Make sure to stress the amount of hours/days/years spent on each EC. The only question is around landing one of the rare OOS scholarships (OOS tuition reductions). Improving her SAT would help with that!

Good luck!

@Gator88NE Thank you for the encouraging reply!

She’ll be sure to expand on the description of her ECs. She really hopes she can land one of the OOS scholarships, as that will play a key role for her acceptance. Her PSAT Reading/Writing was 690 (99th percentile), so she’s confident she has a good chance to improve on the August SAT.

@Gator88NE For the August SAT, D was able to improve her SAT score to 1400 (680 RW, 720 M). Hopefully, that will put her in the running both for admission and possibly, maybe, hopefully, for a partial scholarship. Every year, it seems to get more competitive for U of F!

@VABogart: Please keep us updated on your daughter’s result from the University of Florida. As of last year, Univ. of Florida reported about 94% of the student body were state residents. I am curious as to whether non-residents are held to a higher standard such as at UNC.

@Publisher I will be glad to keep you posted. I think everyone hears from U of F on February 8th whether or not they are admitted.

@Publisher UF’s OOS acceptance rate is about the same as it’s in-state rate. For example, for the Summer/Fall 2017 enrolled students, domestic OOS acceptance rate was 45%, while in-state was 41%. This reflects the very high acceptance rates (yield) for in-state students (58%) and a fairly low yield for OOS students (24%). The % of non-Florida residents was almost 12% (of enrolled Freshman).

We don’t yet have the numbers for this year’s class, but we did have a large spike in OOS applications, and UF’s overall acceptance rate did drop. As UF becomes more popular with OOS students, I expect it’s OOS acceptance rate will start to drop, however, OOS acceptance rates are likely to stay similar to it’s in-state acceptance rates, at least for a few more years.

Lets do a quick comparison:

UNC (2017)
40,918 applied
9,709 admitted (24% of all students applying; 46% of NC applicants; 14% of out-of-state applicants)
4,355 enrolled (45% of all students admitted; 61% of NC admits; 20% of out-of-state admits)

UF (2017)
33,153 applied
13,654 admitted (41.2% of all students applying, 41.2 of FL applicants: 45.5% domestic out-of-state applicants or 41.1% if you include international students),
6,543 enrolled (48% of all students admitted, 58% of FL admits: 24% of domestic OOS)

UF did see an increase in applications for the Summer/Fall 2018 class, mostly from OOS students.

For Summer/Fall 2018, UF admitted 14,866 of its 40,849 applicants for the class of 2022 or an overall 36% acceptance rate (vs 41% in 2017). It will be a few weeks before we get the final numbers on this year’s class (the # of enrolled students isn’t finalize until a few weeks into the semester)…

Really, I think the #1 issue/challenge for OOS applicants to UF is cost.

Your daughter is an impressive candidate and should have an excellent chance. Put in the time on the essay, of course.
