I got accepted into an out of state college, and with the acceptance letter they sent me paper saying something about out of state residency? Then on the website it says residency reclassification application? Does anybody know what that stuff means? What is out of state residency?

In state residents enjoy lesser tuition because the state’s residents’ taxes fund the college. You won’t qualify.

OP, Some colleges which are close to state borders do offer in-state pricing to students from certain counties, etc. Check on the school web site to see if that applies to you. You would save $ paying in-state rates.

Mich explains it this way, most are similar:
Residency Classification Guidelines have been developed to ensure that decisions about whether a student pays in-state or out-of-state tuition are fair and equitable and that applicants for admission or enrolled students who believe they are Michigan residents understand they may be required to complete an Application for Resident Classification and provide additional information to document their residency status.

It can be a random auto-check or specific to your situation. If you don’t qualify, you don’t qualify. If you, by some chance, do, then you’d get in-state rates.

Is this Alabama? I know you applied to Alabama. Back in April I asked you if your parents would pay the high OOS rates, but you didn’t answer.

Were you not aware of being an out-of-state resident (not a resident of the state of Alabama)?

you’re in Calif, right? You’re an in-state resident for Calif publics. that means that you would pay the instate rates at UCs and Cal States. Students from OTHER states would pay out-of-state (non resident) rates to attend a UC or Cal State.

Oy. This will be ugly.

^^^That’s what I was thinking.

Youngteg…are you aware of your college costs as an OOS student?

What are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay?

If you applied for aid, then certainly your FA pkg would have said how much the costs were.

Yeah I got in Alabama for spring , I am aware of the out of state rates. They are pretty close to the uc in state rates. My parents will help me out some, i will be getting loans like my brother did. My parents arent much supportive of me going out of state, so they are hung up on that. My brother said get Loans and pay of after college, as he is. since I am going to Alabama in spring, I’m a little disappointed. Will I be ok, like fitting in wise? I am going in spring because I missed the app deadline in February. I’m kind of scared going in spring.
