This is my first post. I am a transfer out-of-state student. Originally I was planning on applying to nursing programs at Cal State University - San Bernardino and Cal State - Northridge’s Nursing Programs for Fall of 2018… well plans have changed last minute and now instead I would like to apply to the universities themselves, (hopefully) get in and apply to their nursing programs later. The reason why is because I still have the nursing prerequisites in progress and will be incomplete by the time of the Fall 2017 term. My primary concern right now is that I have 35 credits. By the end of Spring 2017 I will have 60 credits. I just don’t want to wait another year and half to transfer. I really would like to transfer for Fall 2017 and just apply to the nursing program that next year. I’m ready mentally and spiritually to get out of here.
Anyways, I guess I’m wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and also what my chances are (especially as an out-of-state student) to get accepted in CSUN or CSUSB. I know that this is all mostly biased opinions but I admit it fuels me to hear others opinions and support, so all feedback is appreciated.
As for my extracurriculars, here they go:
I am Historian of the Honor’s Program here on campus, Vice President of the Nursing Program, Biology Club, Spanish Club, Native American Club, Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society member. I have extensive volunteer work which includes being an active Planned Parenthood Volunteer, volunteering at the Food Pantry on campus, volunteer at an animal shelter. I am a Deputy Registrar, meaning I am certified in registering people to vote. I’ve also volunteered at other small events here and there. I also work part-time as a preschool teacher. (:

I understand there is no financial aid. I have talked thoroughly with my family and loans will be the right choice for my situation. Also, I am planning on applying for scholarships.
Cal state Northridge has been very impacted especially for Nursing for the last few years and only local applicants have been able to get an acceptance. Cal State San Bernardino is also impacted for Nursing and priority is given to local applicants. Before applying, I suggest you contact both directly to ask if they would even consider a lower division transfer (less than 60 units) from OOS. Do you have the Golden 4 courses completed? This is a must even for local applicants:
The CSU GE-Breadth Requirements is a lower division 39 semester/58.5 quarter unit pattern with specified courses in the areas of:
Area A — English Language Communication and Critical Thinking
Area B — Scientific Inquiry and Quantitative Reasoning
Area C — Arts and Humanities
Area D — Social Sciences
Area E — Lifelong Learning and Self-Development
These are the courses for the Golden Four:
Oral Communication
Written Communication
Critical Thinking
Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning
Awesome! Thank you so much. I am looking to transfer as just a general transfer student at this point and eventually the nursing program. Would I be able to do that? I’m just looking to apply to the university itself, not the nursing program at the moment.
Do you plan to apply for Pre-Nursing and finish your Pre-req’s or another major?
Here is information regarding transfers and Pre-Nursing for CSUSB (Note: no mention of accepting Lower Division Transfers) so call admissions:
Admission of upper-division transfers to Nursing majors will be based on transferrable grade point average and completion of prerequisite coursework. A minimum of 3.50 GPA is required, and a minimum grade of “C” is required in each of the following courses with an overall GPA of 3.00: Oral Communication (A1), Written Communication (A2), Critical Thinking (A3), BIOL 220, BIOL 223 or 224, CHEM 205, and MATH 115 or acceptable Statistics.
According to the Cal State Northridge website, they do not accept lower division transfers (less than 60 semester/90 quarter units):
NOTE: Due to increased enrollment demands, Cal State Northridge does not currently admit lower-division transfer applicants. No exceptions are anticipated at this time. However, if future exceptions are made, lower-division transfer applicants may need to meet the eligibility requirements listed below. For exceptions and updates, please check the Admissions Calendar.
All upper division transfer students need to meet all the criteria listed below:
Have completed a minimum of 60 transferable semester units (90 quarter units) with a grade point average of 2.0 or better;
Be in good standing at the last college or university attended;
Have completed the CSU General Education Writing, Mathematics, Critical Thinking and Speech Communication courses with a C or better*; and
Submit all official college transcripts, including work now in progress, to Admissions and Records.
@honeymoomphase: You need to make sure that if all your units are CSU transferable, so again I would contact admissions at both schools.
Hmm, guess I should be more specific in my questions. Okay, so I understand all of that. I have been in contact with CSUN and CSUSB over the past couple of months regarding transferring. I would have the required amounts of credits before beginning the Fall 2017 semester…my question is if I would still be eligible to apply even at 35 credits, considering I will have the required 60 by the time i was enrolled… I have asked them as well but they’re always so busy and copy and paste information just like you have so I am curious as to if anyone else would know the answer. @arc918 I have not. I really have researched on my own since out-of-state is one of those topics that can be confusing and not “the norm”. I really just googled “California Universities with nursing programs” and those two came up as well as a ton others that I’ve considered. Are there any private universities you recommend that also have nursing programs? Thank you!
As long as you will have 60 CSU transferable units by Spring 2017, you should be fine in meeting the transfer requirements. Just trying to understand why target these schools and why you want to pay $36K/year to attend?
For privates, look at Azusa Pacfic and the University of San Francisco.
When we speak of no financial aid for OOS students, that includes scholarships. The best aid comes from the universities themselves.
From where were you going to ask for scholarships? Neither the State of California nor the universities themselves provide funding for OOS students. So, expect $40k per year minimum. Southern California is an extremely expensive place to reside. Expect transportation to be a headache as well.
Alright so I also have an option to move to California and live there. Would you suggest moving there first, taking cc classes and then applying to the uni’s? By that time I’d be eligible for in-state tuition.
If you come to California for the purpose of education, it will be difficult to obtain in-state residency. Are you financially independent from your parents?
Agree, coming to California for educational purposes, with an OOS transcript will not gain you instate residency and you will be full pay; your options will be loans only and those are limited in amount. Your parents would have to take out parent loans to meet the costs of the Cal states as an OOS.
