I Live in Massachusetts and am thinking about applying to Ohio State. I read somewhere that after your freshman year, the university considers you a resident of Ohio. After your freshman year, out of staters are able to pay in state tuition. Is this true and can someone verify this for me? thanks.

If you’re a dependent I think your parents would have to establish residency in Ohio. Here’s a link to their residency requirements:

Not true.

What would be the point of OOS tuition if it was that easy to change?

It is absolutely NOT true and I can’t imagine where you might have read that. If that were the case, NO upperclassmen would be paying out of state tuition at Ohio State. Clearly there are PLENTY of upperclassmen paying OOS tuition.

If your family resides in Massachusetts, you are instate for tuition purposes in Massachusetts.

If you want to be instate in Ohio, your whole family should plan to move to Ohio by August of your senior year in high school (so they can have the one year to establish instate residency before you start college).

Between UVM and OSU, you seem to have a taste for out-of-state public universities. FWIW, the OOS tuition at the U. of South Dakota is $4,790! (I think they need as many new residents in SD as they can get!)

The U. of Minnesota’s a good OOS value at $16,700.
