I just took a counseling class at my CC and the counselor I feel gave me a lot of wrong information.

She told me that my CC would have to evaluate my transcript from my previous university and that that evaluation would be good enough for the UC's and CSU's. When I looked on the school website, it says that "foreign transcripts" (I believe this means out-of-state, not out-of-country) have to be evaluated at the specific UC or CSU.

So does this mean that those courses are only evaluated at the time I send in my application (w/ CC transcript + previous university transcript included) to a UC/CSU? This scares me because if one of the courses does not meet the standards, I would hate to take a 3rd year of CC just to complete one or two GE's.

My counselor also told me that I should NOT be taking GE's that I took at my previous university because this would hurt my chances. I really would like to re-take these classes and get a better grade, but if the Universities frown on this, then I won't.

Any other advise, guys? Anyone else been in the same Uni -> CC -> Uni predicament?

Each college or university to which you apply/are accepted to will require transcripts from all college work attempted. Each UC and CSU maintains its own course list and will evaluate your courses independently to determine which courses will receive direct course credit, equivalency credit, elective credit or no credit.

Because the UC maintains articulation agreements with all California Community colleges, it may help a bit if a California Community college designates a particular course as equivalent to one of theirs, as this may help convince a UC that the course should receive the same credit as the equivalent California Community college course - but there is no guarantee that this will be the case.

As for re-taking courses - in general, courses in which you received a C or higher may not be retaken. Use your time wisely and take the required courses you lack rather than re-taking courses for which you have already received a C. Also in general, courses in which you received a D will not transfer and should be re-taken.

The problem I have is that I retook a sociology course I had a C in initially at my previous university. I retook that class at my previous school, not at CC, and got an A (I did this because I needed to get a B or better for the major req. I had at the time).

Does this mean I should take a different social science class at CC to meet the GE requirements? I’m taking the bare minimum GE requirements because I’m looking to get into a STEM major and the UC suggests that I take as many technical major courses as possible.

Other than that, I don’t know why my other GE courses wouldn’t be transferred. They’re all from a state university: College Composition 1, Sociology, Psychology, Speech 1, and Intro to Visual Arts, and are all worth 3 semester credits each.

Do you recommend that I still take some other humanities or social science classes just in case? Or would this hurt me as well?

Alamemom gave very good advice. She is correct that every college (UC, CSU, private) accepts whatever course they choose. Just because the courses are from a state university doesn’t always mean that they are all transferable.

For community colleges, you can check assist.org (not the easiest UI to use but gives good info). Also note that there is a difference between a course that is transferable or one that is equivalent.

For other colleges, you probably need to do more digging.

This makes sense too. If the communit college shows that you satisfy some class requirements, the UC/CSU might just accept that. You should still check with the UC/CSU though.

Here’s a thing you should do. It would be easier if you got a CSU cert from you community colleges. I had a problem with a Golden 4 class not transferring from my pervious university and my CSU told me that if I got a CSU cert from my CCC and they take the course then they would transfer the course. I got denied from every school because of that one class. Had I known this before I transferred it wouldn’t have been a problem.

Okay, got an update here. Just met with a counselor and this is how things are looking.

The CC will evaluate my transcript and this will help the UC determine if those credits should transfer as well. The UC has the final say, but the generals I’m requesting to be evaluated are pretty straight-forward among state colleges throughout the country and should transfer.

One of the classes is in a gray area. It might be either EWRT 1A or EWRT 1B. I need to have this class evaluated by the CC and also ask all UC’s and CSU’s I plan on applying to if this course will transfer, and what would be its equivalency.
