My family cannot afford anything what so ever to help me out in college they don't even want me to go to college. I want to go to an out of state college really bad but they are to expensive even with fasfa and some scholarships.I'm not that that smart I have a B average but there is nothing here for me in Florida . Should I take a financial risk and go knowing that I might not come back because of the lack of money.

Ok…that is ridiculous. FL is a huge state with many college options. The state is also large enough that different regions of it are very different from the others.

???

What? You can’t go anywhere w/o funding. If your family is low income, then you would get a Pell Grant, which is, at most, 5700. Not enough to go OOS. And you could get a $5500 loan…again, not enough to go OOS.

You need to be practical.

What is your major?

What FL univs are near your home?

Do you qualify for Bright Futures?

I’ve visited some of the colleges here like UF ,UCF, AND FSU but none feels right . My major is business and no I don’t qualify for bright futures.

You have to be grown up to realize that you may need to attend a school that’s not your first choice.

Well, there are OTHER schools to check out.

USF, UNF, FIU, FAU, and others.

Which, if any, is close enough for you to transfer to?

BTW…what did you dislike about UF, FSU, and UCF? Did you take tours at each school?

When people take a financial risk like that, it’s usually to get into a specialized program that they can’t find in state. Business is not one of those programs. Put another way, there is likely to be zero return on your investment.

What investment? The student has no money to invest.

A reality check is needed. The student can’t go anywhere w/o funding. Parents won’t pay anything and aren’t supportive. Student’s stats won’t even qualify for Bright Futures.

The student has to deal with the reality of the situation…No money, Business major that can be gotten nearly anywhere, and lives in a state with lots of choices and lots of diverse regions.

If your parents won’t help, then like so many Americans you’re going to have to go to community college. There may be restrictions on going anywhere other than the county in which you live.

One plan: you go to school, you work hard, you take a job to help cut expenses, and you live at home–unless the situation at home is dangerous. You keep your head own and live for yourself. Don’t engage with the things that make you want to leave Florida. You do what you have to do for you, and you plan how you’re going to afford the second four years of college. Outside of FL, if you wish.

One of the best ways that a student can bring down costs is to live at home and commute. When parents won’t “pay” for college, then living at home can mean an in-kind contribution of about $10k per year.

What FL univ is within commuting distance?

And WHY do your parents NOT want you to go to college? Money? They don’t like school? What?

Sindy, things don’t always “feel right” till you are in the middle of them and resolve to make the best of them.

As mom2collegekids said, there are TONS of colleges in Florida, and certainly one would work for you (if not CC). My sister graduated from FIU, as did a lot of her friends, and they are all very successful now.

Try to focus on the long term and you will do fine.
