How does TCNJ handle out of state applicants? Is it harder, easier or level playing field?

I’m not exactly sure what criteria they use when reviewing out of state apps, but there is definitely a lot of in-state competition. I know 95% of students are from NJ, so that would make it harder for out of state students. I’ve heard applications to this school are going to be insanely high this year. All of my friends (in-state) are applying, and I assume this will be the trend throughout the state. TCNJ is attracting every student because of the great education value. Normally admissions here are very selective, and the influx in apps this year will make it even more selective. That’s not to say that the school will reject a brilliant out of state student, but it will make it more difficult to get in…

In-state competition may be tough but still keep in mind that being out-of-state will make the candidate more “unique” …that’s not to say being an out-of-stater will definitely get you in but it could make you more appealing…either way it’s almost impossible to tell which way the college will look at it but you’ve still got as good a shot as anyone else

Totally agree, hazeleyez. TCNJ is a great school but lacks name recognition outside of the state. Accepting OOS students is one way to get their name out there. When my daughter applied to TCNJ two years ago, I was told this by the rep at a local college fair. Also, OOS students pay more than in-state students so it would seem to be win-win for the college to make it easier for OOS students to be admitted. With the uncertainty that exists in todays admissions process though, anything is possible!

I can personally attest that being an OOS student is an advantage in the application process. One, because I myself am an out of state student, and two because ive spoken to a lot of admissions people here at TCNJ and they are eager to recruit more out of state students. If you have any other questions feel free to message me, i’m a current freshman out of stater

I don’t see why TCNJ would make it harder for OOS as they pay higher tuition. So I would think OOS applicants are at a level playing field or be at a slight advantage.
