out of stater chances

I know flopsy already responded when I posted on the what are my chances board, and I appreciate the opinion flopsy. I just want to get some more opinions on what others think my chances are at UCLA which is my first choice school. I'm from NJ by the way.

GPA:
Can't really tell you much about it since GPA is rated on a 4.0 scale over here. The UC's have their own way of calculating your GPA, so the only thing that your high school GPA might count for is your class rank. It's unfortunate that they don't offer AP's, but the UC's will take into consideration all of the courses that your school offers. Since you're planning, or already have taken, all the tough courses your school offers, you're on the right track.

EC's:
Hate to sound so blunt, but nothing stands out. Anyone can be a member of a club. Try to consider more leadership positions. At the same time, try to pursue something that you are genuinely passionate about (that is something that I reaaaally think got me into ucla). When people ask me for advice to get into a certain college, my number one advice is to concentrate on your passion. Then the admission officers will see your dedication, commitment, and effort towards your passion, whatever it may be (Journalism? sports? Philanthropic?). A lot of bland applications that UC's get from applicants are a list of things they've done, and they can see through it that the applicant probably did those things to look good on their college application. Do something that makes you stand out of the crowd. You're competing against about 43,000 other applicants for about 10,000 spots.

Okay, maybe the tutoring for abused/homeless kids stands out a bit, but i guess that's because it's something that i really admire seeing when people do those kinds of things. Maybe concentrate on that, or expand on it. Start up a program maybe? recruit people for it? I'm sure you can do more than 1.5 hours of tutoring.

SAT's:
Your scores are pretty good, way better than mine. I believe they only take scores in one sitting though. Nothing else needs to be said, hehe.

Overall:
as an out-of-stater, all I know is that it's more difficult for you guys, since they give priority to CA residents, but don't let that deter you though. You seem to be on the right track, but you can probably expand more with your EC's.

Here are some links you might want to look at:

Freshman Admission:
http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect/Adm_fr/FrSel.htm

In the second link, they posted the personal statement questions from last year. Although they are last year's questions, it seems as though each year the questions are generally similar. So just familiarize with what they're looking for and concentrate on it.

I hope I helped a bit, and best of luck!

Thanks for the help! I agree with you on the EC thing, its just I haven't been able to get myself elected to some of the clubs I'm in. The only other thing I didn't add, not that its that important but for newspaper, along with being sports editor this year, I went to Atlanta for a conference with 3 other students for newspaper. I also won best news story and best sports story just in our school. I can't say I really enjoy anything that much other than sports, which because I go to a public magnet school, it is extremely hard to play sports (because it would have to be at my town's high school, and they get out of school an hour earlier).

My school doesn't rank by the way. Soph and Junior year, I have recieved straight As.

Hey man. I got into UCLA this year with a lower gpa, pretty much the same SAT I and lower SAT IIs and lesser ECs from out of state. To be specific, I had 1480 SAT I, 720/700/690 SAT II and a ~92 gpa. I guess that should be encouraging for you but UCLA is somewhat "random" I guess so write some good essays. Good luck.

That is encouraging, thanks. Where are you from by the way? Are you going to attend UCLA?

I'm from NYC and yes I am going to attend UCLA.

how willing are UCLA to accpet kids when they are international (im am english speaking), i have various ec's (head of local council, senior prefect, peer mentor, 5 year drummer, swimmer, ex judo, various certificates of academic achievement including on the school able gifted and talented list for science history and music, and 200+ hours of voluntary work) i am generally and a*/a occasioanl B student, how would i do finance aside, considering i am an outsider?

dodgerblue,

your chances at UCLA are okay... if you were an in-state resident, i would say you'd be a match for UCLA. for out-of-state, it's a little tougher. i would recommend writing some good essays that can push you over the top. good luck!

english,

UCLA i believe is one of the top 5 colleges in the USA with the most international students. there's even a residence hall that's only for international students. i can't judge what your chances are seeing how i'm unfamiliar with international students and you haven't provided your SAT score or TOEFL or anything else. but your extracurriculars look solid. good luck!

thanks, im going to take the SAT soon as it is not something we have to do as a matter of course in england, Thanks for the encourgement and i shall definalty work hard on my essays :)
