out of the twelve residential colleges which one do yalies find the best? Is it the facilities, architecture, etc., i really want to know!

You're never going to get an unbiased opinion, but consider the following:

Morse and Stiles have no right angles in their rooms and are furthest from the middle of campus.
TD and Silliman house freshmen in the college (ie: not on old campus w/ the other 10 college's freshmen).
Berkeley is reputed to have the best food, although anyone can eat there.
JE is the richest college and is being renovated this year.
Calhoun, Morse, and Stiles have yet to be renovated.
Trumbull is the smallest college.
Branford's master is evil.
JE, Stiles, and Silliman are all known for their college spirit.

What about the others? Basically, I'm just mad that you didn't mention anything about my college - Saybrook (or about Pierson and Davenport, but who really cares about that). Which brings us to the essential point of this discussion - almost every Yalie will tell you that his or her college is best.

Do you even get to pick?

post #4 is right on point: you don't, and the administration carefully places students among colleges so as to be as heterogeneous as possible.

Sval is absolutely correct. Talk to any Yalie past or present and they will tell you why he or she was in the BEST college. And I believe they are being totally sincere. Here's the thing, after you are assigned to a college, the people you are with become your family. After four years, you love them - flaws and all. Before you enter Yale you look at what each has to objectively offer and think you have an opinion - but once you are assigned and living with the other students, all you preconceived ideas evaporate.

I heard about a Sayburgian T-Shirt that read: "Our group of randomly assigned students is better than your group of randomly assigned students"

Gotta love that! LOL

(go JE Spiders!)

T26E4 - I own a t-shirt with that on it, and it really does describe how people in every college feel about their college. Though we're randomly divided, we all know that our people are the best.

I wouldn't say every Yale student thinks their college is the best. It's a running joke among my friends in Stiles, Morse, Calhoun, and JE that in some ways their colleges are not...um...premium.

People are content with the college to which they are assigned, but also realistic. I'm happy I'm in Silliman and would not wish to be assigned anywhere else, but objectively, the food, architecture, etc. is not the most impressive at Yale. Everyone becomes fond of their particular college and enjoys their time here...that's the important part.

Is it true that Pierson is the "stupid" college? where would that assertion even come from?

Mooooraaaaaaah

Any of them >>>>>>>>>>>>>> any other college in the United States.

pX: stop beating around the bush. Tell us how you really feel about Yale! LOL

posterx is the person I most want to meet on my parent's weekend visit to Yale. Is he on the tour?

Branford's master isn't evil... he is a bit strange though.

Berkeley has one the most popular master on campus (he teaches intro psych), the most desired dining hall, the best location, some of the better housing, and by far the most attractive students. Our IM performance may leave something to be desired, but we have way more fun than the crazy intense sillimanders and stilesians. Personally i'd rate the colleges as follows, although everyone has their own opinions and they're really all great:

Berkeley, Branford, Davenport, Silliman
JE, Pierson, Saybrook, Trumbull, TD
Calhoun, Morse, Stiles

Calhoun could change a lot after renovation (scheduled for next year)

svalbardlutefisk - there's a college called "Saybrook"? I thought it was just a random collection of people who stripped at The Game.
T26E4 - heavy pershing? that's sweet

So what is the deal with res. coll. placement? Apparently they tell us during the summer but I heard that if you have an alum connection with a particular college you can opt in/out... that right?

My uncle went to JE -- that count?

It seems like it may make sense for some ppl to opt in if you are allowed to do that rather than face being randomly placed in a rc that isn't as good...

BTW, how bad are the bad ones really? The photos of Stiles and Morse from Welcome to Ezra Stiles College and Morse College - Home make them look HIDEOUS relative to the other colleges...

Stiles and Morse are unattractive from the outside compared to the other colleges, but they have loads of singles inside....

As for placement, if a parent or sibling was in a particular college, you can choose to be in or opt out of it. I don't think uncles count.

Yes - as much as my DD loves her college and couldn't imagine being anywhere else - she does lust after the spaciousness of the rooms at Stiles. They are also convenient to the bookstore, shopping etc.

The renovation of Stiles and Morse will include ridding them of many of their singles and generating the suites as in the other ten. When ES and MC were built in the early 70s, there was a huge student-led movement to ask for more singles. Subsequently, it's turned out to be a failed experiment -- the social circles in the other were seen as tighter and more rewarding -- or so I've heard.
