Hi, I'm wondering out of the colleges I have chosen to apply to, which of these colleges aren't worth my time? This won't detour my decision, I'd just like to get some opinions. Thank you.

Ohio State University
Michigan State University
University of Wisconsin-Madison
University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign
University of Iowa
University of Nebraska-Lincoln
University of Colorado-Boulder
University of Florida
Florida State University
Lehigh University
Washington University in St. Louis
Vanderbilt University
Pennsylvania State University
University of Conneticut
Boston College
University of Alabama
University of Georgia
Texas A&M

Are any of these schools not worth going to?

This is just a question, I know in going to get those comments saying, "go to the college you feel is right." And I agree, just wondering if anyone has super negative things about any of these colleges. Thank you once again.

Are you a junior crafting a college list, or a senior who’s been admitted to all of these and must decide by tomorrow?
What’s in-state for you?
What are your stats (GPA+test scores)?
Can you give us net cost ( tuition+RB) - (scholarships/grants) at each of them?

@katthekitten1234, you will find someone from each school who doesn’t like it, so this is not a great way for you to whittle down your list. Better off, as the poster above says, providing some info about YOU and asking people who go to those schools to weigh in on how good or bad the fit for you might be. And even then, it’s a totally unreliable and pretty shallow way to get info on a school. I couldn’t even 100% predict which of those schools my own children would like, nevermind a total stranger.
Also, the word is deter, not detour… :-)

I know folks who have gone to those schools. I can find a pro for each one. They are all worth considering. You need to give more info about yourself before we can help you narrow you list, if that is what you are attempting to do.

It also really depends on what you’re going for. Nearly every university has strong fields and weak fields of study. Look up the full-time employment rates of undergraduates who majored in what you want to do and keep that in mind when you decide. They’re all nice schools!

I’m a junior just looking at colleges, I haven’t been admitted, my GPA is 3.9 and my SAT is 1500 and my ACT is 21. As far as tuition goes, I can afford up to 45,000. My in state college would be University of Illinois, but it’s not my “ideal” college persay.

If your SAT is 1500 on the 2400 point scale (assume it is from your ACT score of 21), you’ll need to spend some serious time with a prep book over the summer to get your score up significantly on your next attempt. The schools on your list, particularly Wash U and Vandy, will want to see much higher test scores. I’d rethink your list to include several safeties that you would be happy to attend.

Where are you instate for? You have a lot of OOS public schools where you might be full pay. And some that are more expensive than 45k. The ones not worth applying to are the ones you for sure can not afford, so run the Net Price Calculator for each to see. If you do some test prep and retake you could be eligible for some automatic merit award from Alabama. For the rest, you don’t have good enough test scores to get merit money, likely. Your test scores will likely hinder you from the private schools.

I’m going to retake it soon anyway, the time I took it my grandma had just passed away so I wasn’t 100%. But usually I get advanced test scores, and I am pretty much an A+ student, so I was pretty disappointed with myself.

Truthfully, you’re going to have to take your scores and work backwards from there (unless you’re an Olympic swimmer or your dad is willing to build a new library for the campus). A 21 ACT won’t get you into even some of the lower schools here - like university of alabama or ohio…they’re an average of 25-28…

I know, I realize that. My grandma passed away the weekend before the test and I spent more time grieving than what I should have been doing, studying. But I am more prepared this time and feel I am going to do much better.

Is that 1500 out of 1600 or out of 2400?
Your grandmother can’t have passed away both before the ACT and the SAT (if it’s 1500 out of 2400).

In any case, you need to prepare very carefully because these test scores (ACT + SAT if out of 2400) will basically keep you out of all the schools you listed.
The public universities OOS that you listed aren’t worth it for you financially.

Ohio State University = look for merit scholarships, but only possible if you bring your scores up to 30-32
Michigan State University = same thing
University of Wisconsin-Madison = run net price calculator
University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign = in state
University of Iowa = run net price calculator
University of Nebraska-Lincoln = check out scholarships
University of Colorado-Boulder = run net price calculator
University of Florida = run net price calculator
Florida State University = “”
Lehigh University = impossible with test scores below 27, aim for 30+
Washington University in St. Louis = try to get 30-32
Vanderbilt University = same thing
Pennsylvania State University = right on your budget limit (45K); if your ECs and essays are great you may be able to get into Shreyer and get $4,000 off that price
University of Conneticut = right on budget limit
Boston College = get scores to at least 27
University of Alabama = get to 32 for scholarship
University of Georgia = run net price calculator
Texas A&M = above budget

Why aren’t you looking at Tulane, Emory, Northeastern, UMN-Twin Cities (= cheaper than most publics on your list), SUNYs (probably cheaper even than UIUC)…

What don’t you like about UIUC? From here, it looks like you like huge public flagships with big Div 1 sports, ie., just like UIUC…

I’ve had some personal bad experiences with UIUC I’d rather not talk about, but, it’s been awhile and maybe I’ll give it another chance. Thank you for the list, I appreciate it a lot.

Agree with MYOS on your scores not getting you into most schools on your list, and a 21 ACT is probably going to keep you out of UIUC too. Middle 50% in most schools at UIUC are 25-30. ISU would be a much better safety for you unless your scores come up significantly.
