My daughter is so excited about attending Scripps! She is hoping to do the outdoor orientation this August. I'm hoping someone can help me with the logistics of moving her in. The website states that students arrive on August 22 and leave for the orientation on the 23rd. My understanding is that dorm move in will be on Aug. 28th. I guess that means she flys out there by herself the week before, does the orientation, and then we join her the evening of the 27th. Is that how it works? Anyone know where they sleep on the 22nd?

Also, I plan on buying many supplies once we're out there to avoid having to ship a lot of things, but can someone tell me if the beds take twin sheets or twin XL? Do most girls wait and coordinate bedding colors?

Thanks for any help or tips. This is our first time at sending a child off to college.

My freshman roommate went on OO and did it exactly how you described. When I arrived, her whole family was there moving her in. As I recall, the girls stayed on campus at the beginning/end of the trip, but that may be outdated info.

I used twin XL sheets every year, which always worked (and I had both old and new beds).

My roommate and I didn't coordinate bedding...we both already had ours by the time we talked. I don't know of anyone else who did, either (judging by word of mouth and the bedding combos I recall :p), but it may happen. My roommate and I both ended up with the exact same colors (our bedding was purple/green, her accessories were all green, and mine were all purple!), so we just took that as a sign of great compatibility! Unless your daughter specifically wants to wait, don't worry about it.

I believe that Bed, Bath & Beyond lets you make purchases at a local store (and/or maybe online?) and designate pick-up at another outlet. It's a nice way of ensuring that you get what you want, get things done ahead of time, etc. without having to lug it all with you on the move. You may want to look into that type of service if you're planning on buying once you get to Claremont.

Congrats to your daughter...this will be an exciting summer :)

Thanks Student615. You have given lots of useful information on this whole forum. I hadn't thought about the option Bed, Bath & Beyond might have of picking up at an outlet close to Claremont. That would certainly help with my need to get things done without having to lug it around!

I'm going to be new next year, as well, and am thinking about outdoor orientation. They way it was described to me by a student who had participated is that you arrive (you can have all your stuff with you, or have your parents bring it later) and you can put it all in your dorm, and sleep in the dorm that night, but they want you to wait until after Orientation to completely unpack everything and decorate. That way you haven't completely taken over by the time your roommate arrives.

My parents are planning to drive me down there, so if I chose to do OO, I have no idea how we would coordinate stuff. Or if they would just take a week off an vacation in Claremont.

I was going to mention "Bed, Bath & Beyond" but Student615 beat me to it.
My daughter's roomate from Chicago did just that, she ordered it (I think at her local Bed, Bath & Beyond) and then picked it up at the one close to the Claremonts.
My daughter decided not to do OO, so can't comment on the logistics of that.

But be prepared for very hot weather on move-in day and the first couple of weeks. Not sure if it is this hot every year but it was 105 -112 that first week and made that move-in day pretty brutal.

The way it worked for me when I did outdoor O (almost 4 years ago! seems like yesterday) was that you could put your stuff in the middle of the room when you got there, but all students slept in a dorm common room on the first night of outdoor O and the night they returned. No one got their room keys until the first day of orientation, when all new students move in. I don't know if this is still the way they do it, but I know they still do the first and last night sleepovers.

Thanks for everyone's help. I did end up just calling to see what facts I could get. For anyone else thinking of participating in Outdoor Orientation, here's what I found out: If a student arrives on the 22nd between 1pm and 6, they will be picked up at the airport by the Scripps van. Everyone (about 75-85 people including the counselors) will use their sleeping bags and sleep in the living room of one of the dorms. I didn't even think about asking where they could store the rest of the stuff they brought! My husband and I plan on then flying out on the 27th and will help our daughter move into the dorm on the 28th.

They plan on posting Ourdoor Orientation registration on the Web around mid-June or as soon as everything is ready. Cost will be $325.
