Outside Scholarships - Need Help

Hi - my d is attending Grinnell and just received a 6,500 local scholarship. The Grinnell site says that up to 3,000 can be applied to self help and the rest is split 50/50 with self help and gift. I understand the policy, but I was wondering if anyone knows what "self help" means? Is that just the 3,000 loan and work study? Does this mean that the only way to apply the scholarship to her amount due is to not accept work study and the loan? Or can it apply to her expected summer contribution from work, or to her expected (my!) contribution?
Thanks!

I am not sure for Grinnell. Some universities apply to the loans first, then work study and summer income. I don’t think there is any difference between getting a job at a college and work study. Does Grinnell have a $3000 loan/year for every aid package?

I think you need to ask the financial aid office about this. Our experience with the college is that people are very helpful and want to explain things.

Thanks. I did as FA but wondered what the “real” experience is. Anyone help with that?

$4750 will be taken out of your contribution, 1750 will be taken off of work study/ loans- but don’t worry about this because you can work more than your work study amount says (it is an estimate) and you can add more loans!

PM with more questions.
