I read somewhere that a typical kid who is a senior is considered a 4 out of 10, so being a 7 out of 10 is quite an accomplishment even if it isn't a win.....

Hi,
Does anyone know if it is worthwhile to join honour societies such as the Golden Key if your student is invited to join? Is it worth the fee, writing essays for scholarships or is it not?

tashmu, what do you mean, "is it worthwhile?" In what sense? College admissions?

Thanks for asking for clarification, NMR, My D is a sophomore and has been invited to join 2 such honor societies, promising access to exclusive scholarships, but for an initial fee of of $50. to 80.00. Just wondering if anyone has experienced any actual benefits in the form of scholarships that are worth the fee, and initial essays, etc.

Sorry, she is a college sophomore, so this may not be available to HS students.

So, it sounds like the finalists probably heard already. But has anybody gotten a letter? Any merit or honorable mentions?

Nothing, but we are in California, so things always take longer.

For Jazz the adjudications were finished on November 22, 2008 and the lucky ones to be invited to Miami were phoned on November 24th & 25th. So those in Jazz who haven't gotten a phone call know that they are not invited to Miami.

The letters for all others with their scores should be arriving within the next week.

My DS did not get invited to Miami and is awaiting his letter to see his score. Two Jazz friends got their phone calls on November 24th and are going to Miami.

Unfortunately, it is probably safe to assume that if you have not gotten a phone call then you will not have to worry about making travel plans.

Still no letter here in Texas.

I applied for writing and just got my letter saying I was not selected for an award. I live in Ft. Lauderdale, which is probably why I got it so soon, but they were sent out yesterday, it seems. Just a heads up.

My letter, however, doesn't say my score. Is there anyway to check that? I'd really like to know if I was on par with at least a 4. Haha.

Thanks for the heads up. I think that there was a way last year to go online and check your score. If you look through the NFAA threads you might find the instructions. If you can't, I'd call and ask.

I teach theater at a rather rural Midwest public school. We have had a collection of winners over the last 5 years. I agree with many of the comments regarding the amazing opportunity that NFAA gives young artists. This year we are thrilled to have 2 musical theater finalists.

Good/Bad News for those waiting for their scores: there was an email sent to many of the teachers on the NFAA listserve indicating that this year they would not be releasing scores. There is new leadership at NFAA and the decision was made that simply following through with the process was an accomplishment and subjective scoring seemed to undercut this fact.

That being said, Honorable Mentions and Merit Award winners will have an idea of their score (9 and 8).

Congrats to all who applied.

Letter arrived today in Texas.

Letter received in CA a few days ago for poetry. I called re MT and they said they were printing them and sending them as they were ready for all categories. One friend reminded me that those of us doing home grown videos (our actual tape quality was not the best, although the performance was fine) are up against the PA schools whose videos end up looking very professional.

My son's category was film. His letter was dated Dec. 12th. He got an honorable mention, so we're very pleased. The letter did mention the number of film contestants --- 6,000. Usually, film is the smallest group in art contests. I don't know if that was the case with YoungArts, but I suspect it was.

cpq...congratulations to your son!

Mom4X, while that is true, there is still hope for those who are doing it in an amateur way. My D got an award four years ago and I videotaped her myself and the lighting wasn't very good. We used the school stage and there were all these noises going on and we kept doing it over and it was just a parent kind of video. So, I think it is possible to win something and enter it without coaching or with nobody who has done it before. But yes, some of these PA schools are involved with NFAA submissions, etc. We only heard of it on CC, LOL and looked it up and entered and our school had nothing to do with it.

SadiesMom, thanks for explaining that there was a change and there was no score this year. We were trying to decipher the letters my DD received for Jazz, Soprano, and Musical Theater which all said the same thing, that she was one of 6,000, and thanks for applying. I thought maybe we had submitted the DVDs incorrectly, so she had no score. Of course I think they're wrong, but its completely subjective, and she's pretty disappointed to not know where she would have ranked.

That being said, she's happy with the colleges she's applied to and been accepted at, but getting national recognition instead of just state recognition would have been nice.

Got the MT letter two days ago, no award and no score, which would have been nice so at least I knew where I stacked up. Anyway, just signed for a registered letter from NFAA and received a merit award in popular voice.

Congratulations Castme.
I know this doesn't help this year's seniors, but in the future, students who need to be videotaped could ask a film student to do it. Usually, they have access to and know how to use cameras, lighting and sound equipment. My son would have been glad to record other artists. I'm sure other film students would be willing as well.

Congratulations Castme on your achievement! :)
